Speedometer stopped

I was wondering if anyone has advice about my speedometer?! It dropped to 'zero' while driving on the highway. I've checked all fuses and ECM relay and everythings OK. Haynes manual says it could be the VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) or the speedometer gear. Went to auto parts and they wanted $200 for VSS. Lot of money if not the problem.
