tired of working for nothing

well for over the past year i have been working making 5.50 and hour,
i usually get around 50 hours a week. and i maybe draw 490-520 every 2 weeks, after taxes. after i pay my tacoma payment and insurance i have maybe $75 to live on til the next payday. im tired of it, im sick of worrying about how im going to make it til payday, i dont spend anything on myself. my truck needs new tires that will cost 600 or more
the starter is giving me trouble, i had to take the insurance off of my camaro so that i could buy groceries. i cant get a better job because there arent any. unless you work in an under ground coal mines, then i could make --15-17 an hour. i am a certified underground miner, but my dad was nearly killed in january over a boss that needed to get his quota in for the month and he was told to go out into un supported top to clean the miner off and was nearly crushed by a huge piece of slate rock. it broke his leg in two places. so im not going back in there ever again. but i just wish things would work out for once. im 22 and still live with my parents, i cant afford to go to college. i like my current job, but i work for a security outfit and work at a company the people here are nice and i dont want to leave them. i just dont know it sometimes

Whats wrong with Arizona weather, I thought it was always nice. No snow, earthquakes, floods. I wouldn't mind living there one day.
As for the topic on hand, I've noticed that the more one makes the more one spends and if one is not careful about managering their money it will go as fast as one gets it. I make now 5 times as much as I did at your age and it still seems like its not enough to make ends meet. But theres always money for beer.
Seriously, have you talked to your supervisors/boss about your problem. Sometimes when an employer hears that a good worker might have to leave elsewhere because of money they may change you to do something else that brings in a bit more pay. How about going to school at night to learn something that might bring in bucks. Computers and Computer Graphic design is a great field, even painters believe it or not, shoot here at work the painters make as much if not more than most professional college degree managers, go figure. Look around your area to see where the money is going. How about refinancing your car for a lower rate. If you have two vehicles, get rid of one and keep the one that is less problems or less to manage and insure. Other than that I do not know what else to say. Just, that I wish you luck.

well my camaro which is a 90 model is paid for. i worked all through high school to pay for it, so it really isnt a drain on me. winter time is rolling around and i was going to take the insurance off it anyway. the car is in show room condition, but i couldnt get no more than 3,000 out of it if i tried selling it, and 3,000 wouldnt last very long and after the money is spent the car is gone and id have nothing but my truck which is my transportation to work.

My only advice to you is, join the Military. You still live with your parents. Join the Military. You can't afford college. Join the Military. Your only making minium wage. Join the Military. You have to cancel your insurance on your camaro just so you can eat. Join the Military.
Now, these very reason (minus the camaro thing and living with the parents) are the very reason why I joined the Navy for four years. I was living in a shitty studio apartment that was costing me $500.00 a month. My car insurance was a whooping $279.00 a month and all I was making was $500.00 every two weeks. Then you add in little things like food, gas, cigarettes (which I need to give up already), cell phone bill, clothes, etc.. I was broke all the time. Then I took a good look at my future and realized that if I didn't try to better my situation I will be working dead end jobs for the rest of my life.
In order to better myself I needed college. I don't have the money to go and I didn't want student loans to haunt me for the rest of my life. So I joined the Navy. I got the G.I. Bill and the Navy college fund. Also, the Navy (so does the Marines but I'm not sure what the Army and Airforce are doing. I would guess the same thing.) has a 100% tution assistance program. This means, if you can make the time, while serving the military will pay for you college class without you having to use the G.I Bill. All you'll have to pay for is your books (just as long as you pass the class).
Plus, while in the service, the military will always put a roof over your head by putting you in the barracks or paying for your rent (depends on your command and rank if you get to have your own apartment). If you do live in your own apartment, the service will also give you a monthly allowance to pay your bills (water, electric, heat, etc). The service will always put food in your belly. If you live in the barracks then you will be eating at the Galley/Mess hall. If you live out on town you will receive another monthly allowence for food.
Look, you may not join the service for whatever reasons but its a viable option for you. I never wanted to join the military but I decided to make some sacrifes in to better myself. Plus, theres always the coast guard.

Been there, done that. It has been the best of times, and the worst of times. All in all I wouldn't trade it for the world! If you think you can do it, talk to a recruiter and see what they are willing to offer. Post in here, and those of us old military men and women, can help you sort the wheat from the chaff. It can't help to look into it. They can't just come take you in the middle of the night.

Dude here's a plan. Find somewhere down south where there is a good job. use monster.com to help find a career, list your proficiencies and let them find you. Take your pick of vehicle, and dump the other. If you find something else up north, dump the camaro, the other way around down south. find a cheap apartment until you can make more. For christ's sake dude, I made more money than you working this summer washing cars at a dealership and I'm 17. What do you do that pays minimum wage?

Congratulations! Your only 17 and you have the rest of your life ahead of you. Sure you can work at the car wash for the rest of your life and brag about how much money your making but of course chances are your still in high school and living with mommy and daddy. Until you graduate HS (or finally, college) and step into the real working world like so many of us, you have nothing to say. Jobs with good income are hard to find. True, maybe he should move to another state that has better jobs but moving is also expensive, unless he plans on putting everything he owns in his Tacoma. Life is hard, my friend.

Open my eyes? Mkay.
Look, its obvious he's not making a lot of money. He works for a security company or something. Maybe he is a security guard for Home Depot. Who cares?
All I was sayin was that you making more money at a cash wash at the age of 17 is great but don't put him down cause you claim to make more money than him.
You gave him some advice, as did I. Lets just hope he takes some of it to heart. Life is tough, job wise, in America right now.

Being a cop in the air force was one of the best times in my life. you will get to meet alot of interesting people, from all walks of life. you will get to do and see things that no body you know will ever probably even dream of. I bet, the reply to not join is going to be about the war... well guess what, the military has over 600 jobs, and not everyone is going to go overseas, so unless you join the infantry, or a infantry support field, I wouldnt sweat about going overseas. join the navy, or the airforce.
My friend went into the airforce, and became a xray technician. after his four years, he got a job at a hospital back in his home town, making close to 75,000 a year. become a aircraft maintenance techician, or a helicopter tech. the money is out there, why not get trained for it for free, and have some fun doing it.

Exactly.
The less informed think that if they join the military they're automatically going to Iraq, or other undesirable places. This is so untrue. Your right, if you join the Army or Marines as infantry your going to Iraq. In my opinion, infantry is the worst job you can have. I've heard it all from many marine friends and its not the life for me.
I'm in the Navy and I've never been to a ship. So far I've been apart of two commands and both were shore duty. Shore duty meaning your command is on land. Plus, both commands were in Italy and Spain. Not to shabby if you ask me. Join the Navy if you want to see the world. Trust me.
Heres a website of all the Navy jobs available. Read through them and decide whats best for you. http://usmilitary.about.com/library/milinfo/navyjobs/blnavyjobs.htm

You can become a mechanic, and try to stay over here, but the problem you encounter is the fact that you are on inactive duty for a long time and can get pulled right back in, which I dont' agree with at all. Don't join the military, its not worth it.

Whoa, whoa, whoa.. C'mon, have you been in the service? Doesn't sound like it.
Normally, and I stress normally, when your no longer active duty you do not get called back in the service. Reservists are the ones who are called to duty. Not former active duty members who have already completed their tour of active duty.

Of course it hard to find a good paying job when you have limited skill sets. If you don't want to use the trade that you know, you're not going to do much better then cheap manual labor.
Oz had it right. Sell your vehicles or at least the truck. Start taking some classes even though you may not be able to afford college now. As for there being no jobs - maybe where your sitting everyone is waiting for someone else to start up a company. Otherwise I see want ads all the time in all the papers I see. The key to getting them is have some marketable skills.

I vote for the military service. Just make sure you take a veteran to the recruiter's office with you. I know a guy that joined the vavy last year to be a fireman. Well, to the Navy a "fireman" is down in the bilge with the boilers, lol. His dad is a retired chief but the kid wouldn't listen. Oh well.

If he seperated from the Army he is not considered an active troop. Once a service member seperates there are non-active reservist. The only way they would be called back to duty is for the following reasons;
1. A major war is happening and said service needs more troops.
2. Said service is serverly undermanned.
3. You personnally have a skill that said service is lacking and actually needs you.
Thats it. Those are some extreme cases for being recalled and recalling proir members would be a last resort. Chances of anyone being recalled after seperation are slim.

Your absolutely right. Recruiters are worse than car salesmen. If anyone is considering joining any service I highly suggest you do your homework. The internet is a great source of information. Look at all the jobs said service has to offer. Find out what bonuses and schools you would be entitled to. Also, before joining you have to take an ASVAB exam. Your score will, depending on high or low, will deterime what jobs you qualify for. So ask your recruiter for an ASVAB study guide, cause my lousy recruiter never gave me one.

During the first Gulf war I was asked to give my contact information to the government, but that was only if WWIII erupted. They will call people up to fifty to help out, but it's only in a national emergency and it's not to do front-line service. Every veteran I knew gladly gave this information, and was willing to do whatever was asked of them. I think a lot of you should just move to Kanada so you're not in the way.

Your right, the decision is his. I hate to get off topic again but here we go.
Off Topic:
Ok, what would you expect from infantry that have to spend at least a year in Iraq? The whole reason we were sent there was because we were told WMD exsisted there. Guess what, according to our goverment there are no WMD. Kinda brings down morale, huh? The troops may be wondering what they're fighting for. No one wants to be there. Not only is weather itself a problem but so is the lack of US support from the Iraqie people. Also, theres also the fear of becoming a hostage and having your head sawed off for the world to see or being killed in action. Now, would you want to be there? Hell no. Look, the military is just another job. Being apart of the military means your a warrior. You job is to fight wars. No if, ands, or buts about it.
So lets keep this On Topic. No more "Dont join the military" posts, please. I offered the man a viable option. If you got something to offer the author, by all means offer it. Give him ideas on how to help his situation. Telling him not to join the military isn't helping his cause. He's looking for answers.

Your absolutely right... a very good reason why not to sign your butt over to them. Very good point indeed. :loser:

Military is not for everyone, thats obvious enough ^. Good thing not everyone thinks like some of you on here, otherwise America would be without an Armed Force. :loser:

I hope I never meet you in person. What an ignorant thing to say.
I gave the orginal poster an option and some information. Thats all. The rest of the time I have been defending the military from those who are misinformed and ignorant. I'm finished with this military bashing. I've made my points. So if you got anything productive to say, then say it. Otherwise...so long...

Take a chill pill and stop being so anal on everyone's point of view, because it doesnt compare with yours.
Tacoma man, have you ever considered teritary education of some sort. Im sure you have some night school or something a rather, or maybe an apprenticeship is the way to go?

My 2 cents, make an informed decision, no matter which way you go; whether it's the same or another job, trade school, college, military, or any combination of those. Always remember it's YOUR decision, not Mom or Dad or anyone else. (Although others' input can be valuable). Get all the info you need, and make your decision.
Also, stay out of debt; don't get into the credit card trap.
OK sorry that's like 6 cents.

make money on the side... thats what i do
I have a little part-time job, that earns me a little cash flow. I just save that money, put it in the bank for important shit (like college). Then i make spending money on the side with other not so legal activities but i have money for everything i want and i'm young i'm not gunna be doing it forever.
I still buy the best clothes and all that... and i dont even work that much, just a couple times a week. You can consider that option... cause the way i see it, you're only young once. And you dont want to be a 30 year old man doing the types of things i'm talkin about

My suggestion would be to grab a night job you could do like one or two days a week.... like Pizza delivery on the weekends is a great way to make some cash!
