Is there a DIY to change the orange part of 96-98 sedan tail lights to just red and white? I saw a civic with red instead of orange. Could you DIY or do you have to buy them?

or you could diy yourself some red tails by buying clear tails, then spraypainting the interior with some near-opaque paint. 'course that's alot of work, what with buying the tails, opening them up and painting... but if it's what you want then you gotta work for it.

Thanks for the replies. Did anybody here try tinting the orange/amber part red? I've read about people doing it with clear tails but I'd think it would be dark if you tinted the amber part. I just prefer DIY than buying new stuff.

buy it. Theres no DIY mod that would even look half as decent. However, I did hear about a special chemical a few years ago that was used to clear out the orange lenses. Supposedly, you would poor a small amount inside the housing and let it sit on the orange lens. It would eat away a layer and the orange would disapear. Again, this is just a rumor that I heard years ago. Dont know if it was true, or bs.

my last car, I had tinted bumper lenses, tinted corner lenses, and tinted tails and never got harassed about any of it. Had the correct color bulbs in each, amber for bumper, corners and rear turn signals , and red leds for the tails, so that my have been why, but I've never got harassed about them.

Buy some Kandy paint, SEM makes Kandy paint in a spray can. Testors Model paint has a few Kandy colors too. In case you don't know, Kandy paint is a translucent color coat. A car painted a Kandy color has a basecoat (usually silver) the translucent Kandy coat, and a clear coat.
The 2 colors from SEM that would work are Kandy Apple Red, and I belive the other is Kandy wineberry (which I think is a little nicer, a darker red). Anyways, it's called SEM Color Horzons. Testors only makes Kandy Apple red to my knowledge. Both of these are trnaslucent Kandy Coats.
Clean you tails, spray them with plastic prep, and then mask off the white reverse area with masking tape. Then spray on the translucent Kandy coat. When your done, let it flash and then spary on the Clear coat. Once it's all dry, you can remove the masking and install them. They will be red tails and red turn signals (which IS legel) and white reverse lights. It will look MUCH better. I got bored one night and did this to an extra set of stock tails I had lying around, turned out great. Looked a lot better, especially when you comapred them side to side. The Kandy translucent color changes the color to red, yet STILL keeps the color legel and still allows light to shine through. Sorry I don't have a pic right now. Maybe I'll try and take one eventaully.
The reason people get harrassed and pulled over with tinted taisl is becuase they tint them black, smoke them, etc...it hides the reflectors, changes the color from red, that IS illegel. In this case, the Kandy coat is red, (the clear helps protect it and keep the shine). The reason you oaint the amber turn signals area AND the red tail/brake light area is the color will match evenly then. As I said, the rear reflectors are still red, the rear turn signals are red, the rear brake/tails are red, the reverse lights are still white...you've kept it all legel. It looks A LOT better...and these tails won't leak like aftermarket red/clear...since they are stock tails.
