timing belt

I have a 1994 Honda Prelude with an H22a motor, after I swapped it in and drove it for a couple months, the timing belt started to make a weird noise(like clattering) I then took off the upper timing belt inspection cover to find out the timing belt was loose. After I saw that I took the entire side cover off, got a new belt, installed it. the same thing happend, no tension at all, I needed a new automatic tensioner which was a rediculous $94.00 at the dealer. Now the car runs fine, but there is this weird howling noise that sounds like a supercharger coming from the timing belt. Also when I shut my engine off, it seems to just die really quick. I think the timing belt is too tight, but I'm not sure?

u just don't want it to snap, that'll be really really bad. you know...i didn't know there was an inspection cover, i need to take a look at mine. i'm sure it needs replacing after 105k miles. how hard is it to do yourself?

well on my car to replace the timeing belt u have to take off the right motor mount, and that ant ver fun, but i dunno on the newer preludes but its nto fun at all, make sure u do the water pump too

with my 92 you have to take off the valve cover to get to it, its not toooo too bad, but its not the most fun in the world. But it will cost you an arm and leg at a dealership. the 200$ part will cost 4x's that to get it installed.

yea cuz like i said the right motor mount has to come off to get the timeing belt around it, theres alot of shit to get that damn belt on, its retarted, the timeing itself ant hard but the belt part ant fun, i dunno tho w/ urs cuz dont v-tech preludes have an auto-tensoner for there timeing belts?

once you get the valve cover, the driverside motor mount, and timing covers off, there is an auto tesioner on the side towards the front of the motor, there is only two bolts to take it off. There is a small machine screw in the bottom of the tensioner which you need to take out in order to retension the piston. after you do that, put the screw back in and that will set the tensioner (they say it's supposed to be an auto tensioner, but it's not really). Make sure the cams or the crankshaft don't move when you got the belt off. once you got the tensioner set, somehow hold tension on the belt (but not too much like I did or there will be a wierd noise). Install the tensioner trying to line up the bolt holes as good as possible then put the bolts in and snug them securely and just reverse the process to reinstall.

same thing with me about that howling noise. it kinda fluctuates and does it at idle too sometimes right?
