ok it all started out when i was going home from wal mart. i was like 1 mile away from my house and it was a curvey LONNGGGG road so i decided to downshift from 5 to 4... only prob was that i was on the fone and shifted it to second.. i couldnt hear much of the sound coming from the clutch or whatever because the music from my stock sound system was pretty loud but the rpm went all the way to 7k rpm =X dammit .. will this affect the car in any way? i rolled up my windows and turned off a/c to sniff to see if anything burnt but i didnt smell anything. i drove it home safely. can any of u tell me what could go wrong or am i just over reacting?

....didnt you notice when you car either
A) bogged from 50mph to 20
OR
B) you had to floor it to match the revs?

Anyway. You should be okay, if you didnt smell anything rubbery burning..... you should give ur oil a quick change though. mightve picked up some crap from the downshift to above redline

lol ok thanks for the replies i just like downshifting when i see them half cars.. aka crx/hatchbacks. they *try* to go fast and think they r cool but when my car is ahead of them and they see my gst sticker they slow down or just make a turn hahhah. o yeah this 1 time i was driving for fun when a hatchback just plain cut me off.. i was kinda pissed so i caught up to it and then came a merge lane.. thats when i shift from 4 to 3 then vroooommmm i was the 1 who went into the merge hahahaha his ass made a left turn =)

I read somewhere that most DSM can actually be ran past the red line for quite some time and still not have an sig damage. Downshifted once from 3rd to 1st pulling up to light. Revved up to 7500 - 8000. I let it rest for alittle, and everything still works fine. Dont worry about it unless it goes off the rpm chart

tranny or clutch

Please dont post unless you are speaking from personal experience. Whats wrong with his tranny or clutch, I see no mention of anything that would make me suspect they are damaged.

If it really was 7000, thats not even redline. If that = was supposed to be a +, then it depends on how much the + was ;) Stock motors can safely take 8500 rpm on occassion. I miss shifted twice in a 1 or 2 month period and pegged the AFC peak hod at 9999 rpm. I was clearly well over 10,000 both times. No imediate damage, but a few months later I had trouble with the flywheel bolts backing out and egging out the holes. So keep an ear out, you'll hear it rattling if things loosen up. If nothing seems wrong with the car there is no imediate damage.

Of course the ultimate potential problem with over rev is the flywheel coming apart, which will total the car (and possibly injure passengers).

I did the same thing on the way home from buying my eclipse. I was trying to shift quick without having a feel for the gears yet and I shifted from 3rd into 2nd. I was driving pretty fast so I think the rpms went up to 7 or 8,000 when accidentally shifted missed 4th and shifted into 2nd. My clutch master cylinder started leaking oil a few days later but it stopped leaking on it's own. It's been three months since then and everything has been okay. But I think that I will have to replace my clutch master cylinder soon.

i have hit the 5-2 accident shift, but being thrown into the stereing wheel was a big indicator to put the clutch back in cuz i was in the wrong gear ;)

and on missed shifts i have never gone over redline...
