old 89 metro
automatic
1st sign was a year ago, at 60+ the sterring wheel would shimmy greatly
a few months ago a noise developed, at 45+ when you let off the accelerator it would wind down and hear a deep sounding wind down noise, like it is in a lower gears, however if you put the tranny in nuetral, the same winding sound is heard and appearant drag on the car as it looses speed..
in nuetral if you rev the engine up, the wind down continues at same time, if tranny is in gear and you accelorate the noise will decrease, the less drag you take of the car by accellerating, the quieter the noise becomes.
ovbiously at this point the cv are going out from all the schimmy, a slow click...clikc....clikc.. can be heard when turning either direction
when you go over a canal, or small incline with no accelleration, if the noise is loud and filling the cab, over the incline the sound will lessen to nearly dissappear when stress is relived form the transaxel
is this some fliud in the front differancal that needs to be checked
a certian bad steering stabalizer
what the list of check points for this one?

Sounds a lot like a front wheel bearing.
Could be wrong on that one, but the low "wind down" noise that you are describing sounds similar to what I have experienced with the wheel bearings, both fronts and rears.
Also, if the shimmy has been bad for a while, check your inner tie rod ends, as they will develop slop, and cause the shimmy to intensify.
good luck
