92 jeep cherokee sport 4x4 4.0L automatic transmition.
ok here is the problem.. it only happens about once a month or so. but when i try to start the truck i just get a click and all power goes out. i have heard most of the time it is the solenoid. but what i want to know is if the solenoid is bad will it cause the jeep to short out? after the click when trying to start sometimes it will take about 15 seconds or so for the jeep to get power again. sometimes i have to disconnect the cables to the battery and reattach them to get the power back. so far every time none of this will let me restart the jeep.
after about 6 hours or so i can try again and every time i usually get the click with no start. disconnect the battery and reconnect then it starts with no problem.. then i have a solid month of no problems then all over again.
guess the question is.. is it just the solenoid? if so is it normal for the jeep to short out because of it? or is it a electrical, cable problem?

if you are losing all electrical power i would have to suspect the battery, cables or connections.

i put new battery in. replaced the terminals at the battery. should i replace the wires from the battery to the system?

HI, IT SOUNDS LIKE YOUR BATTERY CABLES AND TERMINALS MAY NEED CLEANING SOUNDS LIKE YOU'RE LOSSING GROUND. COULD BE THE CABLES HAVE CORROSION INSIDE CABLES. CAUSING VOLTAGE LOSS DALE [email protected] :evillol:

sounds like a bad connection at the battery or the solenoid or the solenoid itself
But if the main battery cables look swollen make a small slice lengthwise on the cable see if there is a green chalky dust in there if you see that then replace the cables

i checked.. i see dust in the cables. going to replace those. question is..is this the contributing factor to the no start and the click. does any one know if the cables are bad it will make the click with a no start or should i just replace the solenoid and starter also.

I'd try the cale first. The starter draws a lot of current in order to crank the engine over. If the cable is internally corroded, it may not carry enough current. All power elsewhere goes out because your ignition switch turns the lights and acc. off in the "Start" position.
