i just got the jegs cat. it today and i was looking at flowmaster exhausts for my 74 camaro. i was wondering if anyone knows what kind it is. do i need two mufflers or just one with the y pipe going into it? its a old car, i thought they have dual exhaust with 2 muffs, not the y BS thats on the new camaros. all i see they sell is the one muff where the y goes into and splits out the rear. anyone can help me that be nice. 73 may be different, 79 maybe be different, i dont kow, i see the system they are selling for a 67-74. well 67-69 are first gens,70-73 are 2 gens different body style, 74-77 is 2 gen with different body style,78-81 and so on. seem wierd, so to keep going on, just need some help if out there, thanks

well, the body styles were different, but the exhaust routing may have been the same. i would say that the 67-74 system is what you are looking for. if you look at the third and fourth gen camaros, they are different body styles, but the exhaust routing is the same.

well now that i think of it, maybe they all have the y pipe to a single muffler. im sure you can get a custom exhaust if you want. i kinda like the look of duals stick under the car. lets say i go with there system with the one muffler, will it have the same sound as if it had two flowmaster muffs? i would like as least the same nice flowmaster sound

yeah it will have the same sound, i have an 80 series muffler on my third gen, with a 3in single pipe system, and it sounds awesome. but youre also right that you can easily have a custom pipe setup installed, just buy the mufflers, have your headers installed, and go to the local exhaust shop, and have em bend ya some tubes.

i forgot, i dont have the price in front of me, but the system is like 300 give or take some. if i get custom, it wil run 600 the most. i know someone that might hook me up if i ask him, noot really friends with him, but my cousin does a lot of welding for him, so i might luck out. you say you have 3 inch. the system they sell is 2 1/2. that should be fine right? thats if i go that route. i have a bit done to the engine, i dont know about 3 inch

well, keep in mind i have a single pipe, so the 3in works for me, and is really overkill untill i put in the new engine. for your application you could run twin 2in pipes and be fine, so the dual 2.5 system would be a great choice and leave you open for future mods.

true dual with 2 1/2 should still be good.

i have a 72, 74,and 75 camaros. the floor pans on the 74-81 are almost identical. i went with the duals on my 74-75 camaros and love it. i used 2 1/2 in\out 40 series flows and did all the welding and pipe bending myself; somehow i managed to get out for under $200.

one both cars i have duals, the 75 has 2 compleaty seperate pipes, the 74 is the one with an h-pipe,x-pipe,or cross over...whatever you wanna call it( pipes are joined about midways down the system before the mufflers to help equal out the exhaust pulses in the system ).

hope this helps

Sorry, i'm not trying to steal your thread, i just got a quick question for 89, I'm now just doing the exhaust on my 3rd gen and I'm going to use flowmasters, but what is the difference between the different series, I was going to use 40 series delta flow, I see you have 80 series, is there a big difference in performance and sound?

I'm also running a single pipe, probably 2 - 2 1/2 inch

the mufflers are flowmasters, the exhaust pipes i picked up at a local exhaust shop. they came in 6ft lenghts, i just bent, cut and welded where i needed to.

no problem man, maybe i can help you. the 40s are a deep sound (the good flowmaster sounds) that is ment for true dauls. meaning two mufflers. the 80 is the same sound(as i just found out) that is meant for one muffler. the 40 has one inlet and one outlet, the 80 has one inlet(coming for the ypipe) and 2 outlets making it a daul exhaust. kinda like a fake one. if you have a 3rd gen, its the same as your fatory pipes just a flow master system. i know they have a quite muffler, not sure, but the "American Thunder" are the nice sounding ones.

i was just lloking at summitracing, and i may be wrong. i might be getting the 80 series mixed up with 50 series. i see theres different ones with different chambers. a 2 chamber is good, one chamber are super loud and 3 chamber are quite. someone else might be able to clear things up. as far as me, i see summit has what im looking for in a few different systems. thanks for you time and help

they have sound clips on the flowmaster website, i listened to those before choosing my muffler. made a big difference.
