I have a 95 z28 and i am trying to find a service engine light code reader to work on the car. Heres the problem...the car has the OBD1 computer system still but has the 16slot port thats used on the OBD2 systems.....none of the obd1 readers will work on it....so would i have to get an obd2 reader or something?

Also you have a OBD 1 system any OBD 2 Scan tool will just get error messages when hooked up.

i got the only obd1 scanner type i can find, all you do is plug it and and yeah i guess its probably supposed to trigger the check engine light. where can you find a good obd1 scanner then? ive been to like 5 different auto parts stores (autozone, napa, etc)

Yeah, I know the one you got it has 2 settings one is either ABS and other is trouble code. Man I hate being the guy to tell you. You have another trip to the auto parts store to return it but 94/95 F-body's( I know the package say's its for our years but trust me it doesn't work) will not trigger/flash the check engine to give you codes. You need either a LCD screen scanner or AKM cable to read code's I have alot of software I can send you for free to scan but you still need a cable. They sell them on ebay though for like $25 - 40 something like that. Also that thing you bought is a waste of money OBD 1 cars that do flash the light can easily be read will the use of a paper clip.

yeah figures...all they are selling you is the book that comes with the scanner pretty much i guess....i'm going to go look up a cable right now, how would i go about getting that software from you?

Another good thing is you can not only read but you can also program your PCM now. Much better than some stupid scanner.
