some help needed...

Ok, was driving to the store the other day and i was in first doing 15 mph at 5 grand and my car stalled and dropped to 1000 rpm's and the engine light went on, then while i was driving if my rpms went under 1,500 my engine would stutter like it was choking or something, this stopped after i turned off the motor, but the check engine light is still on and my civic runs like normal again, what could be the problem?
