Everyone,
I could not help it! I have 500 miles on my 2005 RX8 and I could not keep it under 4000 RPM. I know stupid!! Now I am going to practice the proper procedure in break-in process.
I am going to take it for a non-synthetic oil change this Saturday, I probably do not have to but I think it will make me feel better.
Besides saying that I am crazy, stupid, or just plain immature etc…
Can some of you enlighten me with your professional experience; this is my 1st rotary engine if you could not tell already.
Have I hurt this magnificent engine in any way, I know this is a tough one to answer.
Thank you,
P.S. Seems I get smoke when I 1st start the car it in the morning, this happens only in the morning.

How long have your been revving that high?
For the whole 500 miles?
If it was only done ocasionally, theres no harm done, but if done all the time...

Thats just stupid. He's breaking in the engine, not trying to race it.

Why are you putting non synthetic oil in a RX-8?

Because of the age-old adage that syn oil causes leaks and should not be used. My recommendation is not to use syn until the engine is broken in properly.

My question is: Why you can't keep it under 4k rpm?
The Engine stalls? The car won't move? Is it MT or AT? If AT, it won't shift up until 4k rpm?

In order to break in te engine, you are supposed to keep it below 4k, but this guy "can''t" keep it below that (read: he wants to dip into the high part of the powerband because he wants the feeling of speed).

I guess you could say that...

I mean, why can't he wait until the engine finish breaking in? Patience is a virtue...

If you just dropped god knows how many thousand dollars on a new sports car, you would want to open her up too.. BTW, whats the base sticker on that machine?

Thats not too bad.. Considering what you get. from what I have seen/read about the RX-8, it is a well designed and built sports car.

It has nothing to do with leaking oil from the engine.
older synthetics were designed NOT to burn at all. With a rotary and oil injection this is a very bad thing. When you burnt the older synthetics you would get an imcomplete burn out of it. Then there would be varnish and other chemicals left on the housings and rotors. this can lead to carbon lock and improperlubrication.
Now you can use MOST synthetics in rotaries as they are beter formulated for this kind of thing. The only ones i recomend are the rotary specific synthetics or Motul oils.
As for smoking on start up, no the 8 is not suposto do that. You may have damaged a seal.

no but they can cause leaks too, because of the constructon of the oil being thinner and all. but your right about the carbon buildup thing.
besides, i never said there was anything wrong with running synthetic in a rotary engine, just that other people have always said that and that i dont think it should be used on breakin.
but whatever.

the makeup of mineral oil these days is far more refined than it was before. It will leak just as much as a synthetic oil will.
Any how if this were true then using it wodul be a better idea as you find where you would be leaking oil from and be able to fix it easily.
