My wife tells me that she heard on the Radio today that in California if you get caught Street Racing they confiscate your car and crush it. Fact or fiction?

I thought they confiscated cars in lots of states, seems stupid to crush it when they could sell them at auction like normal confiscated cars.

I believe its license suspension, a decently sized fine and your car gets impounded (dunno for how long)

If your caught street racing in los angeles county your car will be confiscated and you have 30 days to get it out of impound, if after that 30 days your car is still in impound it will either be sold at a lien sale or crushed. But this is a local ordinance for los angeles county only, in other countys your license may be suspended or your car may be impounded. Hope this helps, i got woried about it to.

Bad times, In minnesota i dunno if you you've heard of that guy that went 205mph on his crotch rocket, he is going to be able to drive again..i'm sure he can't get a motorcycle license but nonetheless, he's still dangerous on two or four wheels...we don't have very harsh penalties...

im just wondering how the cops catch you if your goin 205 on a crotch rocket i believe i would of had to run

Eventually everyone has to stop. As for the laws, it is the worst possible penalty you can get. Around here is is heavy fine with points on liscense, or short suspension, depending on the situation.

all a person on a crotch rocket would have to do i sjump on the highway hit it and even the helicopters couldnt keep up with him

The airplane was having a tough time keeping up. The guy on the bike said he was doing around 175mph but the plane said 205, he was on a 1000xx Honda. Bet we would not have heard about it if he did get away.

I thought crotch rockets where the little ones with like 50cc motors....top speed ofl ike 70mph...not 205...
In addition:
I saw this video. it hella insane. all you see is the motor cycle guage cluster and the road. its sitting at 70mph. you can hear a little turbo wine but it isnt spooled and the guy is in 6th (digital gear display) and sitting at 2800RPM... he downshifts to 3rd and you hear that turbo spool. nexthing you know he is at 10,000RPM and shifting into 4th, 2seconds later he is at 10,000RPM agian and hits 5th. at this point he is going 215 and the speedometer stops at 250mph. goes all the way through 5th and by the time he gets into 6th the spedo is flat lined...he gets to 8900RPM in 6th and the camera looks up then back down at the cluster... he was accelerating so fast that the speedo looked more like a slow revving engine's tach than a speedometer. im geusing he was going about 270-280 before he let off. i didnt know thoes bike engines could make enough power to reach thoes speeds that quickly. if ican find a link to this video i will deff post it.

never heard of a airplane being used in a chase,i was watching police wildest chase videos one day, they only show that dont get away, and these 2 guys stole a porsche and were outrunning the helicopter on the highway and the ground units couldnt keep up,then they turned on surface streets and got caught, but the narrator said they would of probably gotten away if they stayed on the highway

It's stupid, but it's true.
And... the video about that bike. it's possible he re-geared the bike with a smaller rear sprocket. I know of some people who do that for stunt riding and it messes with the speedo. Thus it reads higher than usual.

my dad told me the same thing out of no where...but he said they burned "drag" (at first i thought he said drug bcuz of his accent) racers on the street and they don't impound or resale them because they don't want cars like that back out on the street (modified and all)

its more than possible, but when the camera looked up you could see he was in the brake down lane and he was passed a few cars, ive been 145 down an interstate passing cars and this looked twice that fast. the lines that seperate the lanes looked like one long blurry line
note:
when we did 145 it was sunday at like 7:30 in the morning, we where heading to jacksonville to go surfing and there was practicly no one on the road, so we pulled off at a rest stop and stashed the boards on top of our friends yukon that had everyone else in it. it was in a 240sx (ever seen a pretty well modified 240 going down the interstate with a 8'9'' long board and a 6'1'' short board? lol) we had 3 people in the car and grabbed the video camera. it was about as safe as it gets, all the early bird truckers where over i nthe far right lane and a few cars in the the far right lane and almost no cars in the middle lane. we came over a hill doing 85 and saw it was all clear and just went for it...car was still pulling in 5th before we hit the top of the next hill so we didnt want to risk it. this is just to clarify that we wernt trying anything like in the "dont do this" post.

The way the plane clocked him is by timing how long it took him to pass the two white hash marks spaced one quarter of a mile apart on the side of the freeway. it took him i beleive 4.63 seconds (been a few days since i read the article).
and planes aren't used in chaces, but they're referred to as the eye in the sky and theyre usually traffic control, they'll time you, photograph your plate, or, radio ahead, and then you get your ticket in the mail.

I wish the laws were more easily available to the public.... I tried to read through the Motor Vehicle laws here but apparently in MA all drag racing is illegal and it's only drag racing if your tires make noise which is obviously not true.

Fact:
I live in central Cali...and i was watching KCAL-9 and KTLA and they were talkin about a new law that if u r caught streetracing...they impound ur car for like 30 days and if u dont get it back..they crush it. Saw it on TV...they crushed a wat looks like a 92-95 IROC Camaro. Crushed it with a big piece of metal. F***ing sucks for streetracers in LA.

Thee is a thread called "Street Racers R.I.P" I believe, one of the posters had a link to a site with dozens of articles about Street Racing accidents where the driver, passenger, bystander, or other driver not involved was hurt or killed. I read every one last week and what stuck out was a majority of the articles was from California, and then like I said when I started this thread, my wife heard about it on the Radio. Being from the eastern end of the US I just had to see if it was a rumor or not and apparantly it is not judging from what I have read so far. Thing is, California starting something usually has a ripple effect to the rest of the states and they will in time jump on the bandwagon also.
For California people now it seems, the question is: With all the big bucks that people spend on their rides to go fast, is it really worth the real possibility of loosing your ride forever just for that high speed adrenaline rush when driving on a public road?

Wouldn't a better solution be to have the state build drag strips and tracks? I myself would not race on the streets that way, but the closest track is like an hour away from my house, costs like$50, and most of the races are on Saturday, and I can't race on Saturdays. Instead, I just race in residential 25 mph zones. Never got caught yet...

Where I am they suspend your license for anywhere from 6 months up, depending on how many points you have on your license, and if you're a repeat offender... That and a hefty ticket.

Sure it would, problem is "urban sprawl". People move out into the sticks and raise hell because there is a race track near them and they don't want the noise so they petittion to get them closed down or fight to get some kind of noise ordinance passed that sets a curfew on the noise, some of those curfews are so rediculous that the track owner gives up and closes because the ordinance only allows them to operate during certain times of the day or night.
Here is a true example, There used to be a track 100 miles from me called Drag City and if anybody here knew of this place and anything I said is incorrect please correct me as it has been a few years since I been there and it was only once, but the jest of it is still the same. The gates opened at 4:00PM but NOBODY was allowed to start their cars unless they were mufflered until 6:00PM because of a local noise ordinance, then you had 2 hours for time trials where you may be lucky to get 2 runs if the car count is large but 2 rounds was the limit and was controlled by a punch ticket you received at the gate, and then races start at 8:00PM. If the car count was really high then they would get 2 or 3 maybe 4 rounds in for eliminations. Then they had to shutdown eliminations even if it was in the middle of a round because that very same ordinance prohibited any noise after 11:00PM at night so the prize money was split among any racer that wasn't eliminated with the amount depending on what round you were in when the races were shutdown. Needless to say the track gave up and closed because the majority of the time they couldn't put on a full show.
