Engine ALMOST overheats

i noticed while i drive, my 94 Pontiac Grand AM v6 almost overheats then slowly goes back to about halfway on the temp guage. Anyone have any clue to why this does this? i'm afraid that it'll actually overheat and i'll be stuck on the side of the road.

I`m no expert , but i had probleme like yours and come to find out it was the pressure cap on the reservoire that did not keep pressure so start there , have it checked to see if its keeping pressure at 15 psi. It doesnt cost much and on my car it resoved the probleme.
