Skyline vs Merc

Japanese engines' (say rb26dett) output is often wound up to 1000 hp and more, which is 3-5 times the stock output. At the same time, European cars' engines output after tuner's interference (guys like Brabus, Carlsson, Hammann, AC Schnitzer, ABT) increases by humble 30, rarely 50 percent. I mean I've never heard of a 1500 hp SL600 or M5. Why is that, what's so wrong with German engines? Is it because European tuners prefer to avoid inclined damage to the engine? Then what about damage to 2,6 litre rb26dett producing 1300 hp? I guess a 6 litre Merc engine would suffer less at the same output. Or is it because euro motors have some inherent problem with being turbocharged?

Um...a 5.5-liter twin turbo V12 could make that kind of power EASILY. They don't do it because what's the point? If you want to build a dedicated drag car, you don't need to spend $100,000+; just pick up an LS1 Camaro for $15,000, twin turbo it, and off you go.

...Not so sure. I see what you mean kman, but what's the point in converting a Skyline, again, into a drag then? not sure about the price of sky in the US but guess it should be 70-90 k depending on the make. After all, Camaros are not on sale in Europe and the cheapest thing you can convert into anything worth mentionning is well above 50 k. Btw, is it true LS1 is only 15k in the US? I'm surprised. Not hell of a racer, yet...

twin turbos are pointless when it comes to drag cars. for instance....all those 2JZ's that run upwards of 1200+ hp all run single turbo conversions.

Why pointless?
A Single is only about 2% more efficient. Albeit, if I was to build a 1/4 miler it would be with a single:)

i was refering to his comment about twin turboing the LS1. like i said...when it comes to drag cars they are pointless.
and you proved my point...but its two percent more efficient? you can stick an insanly large turbo and put out twice the power than two small turbos. although....that means tons of lag, on the quarter mile it makes up for it once the turbo spools.

I hear people do turn there twin turbo engines (2JZ, RB26) because its not as big of a bitch to work with one. Most of the 800HP + Supras and Skylines, have single turbo setups. In fact, my friend has one on his Supra.

hi all
my 1989 skyline gts-t with HKS exhaust and airfilter only took on a my other car , 2002 mercedes clk 320.
why did the skyline beat the merc ?
skyline is much lighter than the merc that reason number one.
skyline engines are designed for abuse and offcourse the redline is 8500 while the merc is only 6000rpm.
would i exchange my merc over a skyline??
well the answer is noway , i love my merc , i get a lot of chicks with the merc!
the skyline on the other hand i love going crazy in . i only use these cars for street raceing .chicks dont dig the skyline when im driving it , the last chick i drove in it screamed and nearly took my left arm off with her sharp nails!!

Look, whether single or twin turbo, what maximal power can be squeezed out of an rb26 without totally raping the engine? I'm not concerned about ease of use (smooth ride is not exactely what you expect from a skyline). I just don't want to reanimate the motor every 100 miles.

You have never driven a Skyline, have you?
You can get 500, 600, 700, 800, 900, 1000hp out of a RB26, pick your poison.
Can you be a little more specific on your questions?
Tring to comparing an engine from one part of the world, to another part, is really not a fair question. They are built for diffent market, and they have to follow different guildlines.
You can build a very reliable RB26 for 500hp, that will last a long time. 3rd gear will be the first thing to go!

as a matter of fact i am in the process of "picking my poison". a week ago i bought a stock r34 and gonna tune it up. thanks for the hint about 500hp. whats your personal experience in this by the way? i was actually tthinking like 700-900 hp, but pretty sure it's going to be a nightmare with all the mech problems. looking for opinions from the side.
i really don't understand your frustration about comparing the engines. some BMWs and Audis, say, are very close in their sense and purpose to Skylines, yet no European car (except Porsche perhaps, i mean TechArts and Gemballas) has ever been boosted to the same extent, i'm talking 1000 hp range. (you've never driven an Audi rs4, have you ;))

Audi RS4, dude I drive a GTR!
I don't have much experiance with GTRs, but I do know a little.
Where do you live?
Who says they are very close? You have the Autobahn in Germany, you have nothing like that in Japan!

Yes, I would love to see that Vanquish as well as the GTR? Please call me Mr. Thomas!

I don't have either Vanquish or 2003 SL class, that's bs. when i was signing up that stupid machine wouldn't let me in unless i indicate my cars, which i didn't feel like as i was looking for some quick answers and thats all. so i started foolling around. what i have now is a humble VW Passat and a Skyline (it's been a weeek like i said). Before that i had a 1997 R129 Merc SL300
I'll get it corrected, sorry for that.

SLUSA, what's got you so upset? ok, to your questions:
1. I live in Russia, Moscow and occasionally in Germany.
2. Audi RS4 and Skyline ARE close. I've driven both and they feel very much alike in handling and perfomance. I'd actually say Audi has an edge over stock Sky in terms of torque and power.
3. Your remark about autobahn and its absence in Japan seems irrelevant. RS4 is a natural cornerer as is Skyline, both are equally good in sharp curves. Audi A8 is an autobahn vehicle, Merc S class is an autobahn vehicle, virtually all american cars are, only worse, RS IS NOT.
4. Yes, i do know how an engine works, right.
5. What i do not know yet is the real potential of Skyline and the best way to modify it to suit my needs. Thats what i am actually trying to concentrate on instead of answering stupid questions (nothing personal).
If you know sth i don't know i'd be happy to read it.
