I recently drove my SL to New Hampshire and burned a quarter tank going 130 miles.

19/25 sounds about right.. i fill my car up at a 1/4 tank and fills up at about 11 gallons.. then i can go about 250-300 miles on that

that 32mpg figure sounds a little (or WAY) off. unless you have a SOHC, not sure how a DOHC could get that good gas mileage. However, there is a great way to get better gas mileage AND have a great top speed: get a taller 5th/6th gear. Team Rip Engineering (www.teamrip.com) will service the 3s trannies and do cool stuff like this. i'm considering have that done when i get my tranny rebuilt in the future. i just love the 3000GT so much, i don't think i'll ever get rid of it.

Hey, linbcker, whatts the price on one of those dealies

if i remember correctly, you can get an 8% taller 5th gear for $100, also the price of the 16% taller 5th gear is on sale for $100. they make a 25% taller 5th gear for $200, but it will only fit in their built/rebuilt trannies, b/c they have to make room for it during the rebuild. but i think those are very reasonable prices. especially for hte 25% taller 5th gear, you could GREATLY increase fuel economy in 5th gear!

of course, those prices are just for the parts. you would need to install the gears and accessories yourself, which supposedly isn't that difficult. there are guys all over 3si.org who have rebuilt and replaced parts in their manual trannies. there are a few websites that document and explain how to take apart and put back together our trannies. interesting stuff, you just have to have a lot of patience when opening up trannies and working on the internals.

another route, is obviously to take your tranny to a transmission shop, and have them install the taller gear. not sure how much they would charge, but i would expect it to be no more than a few hundred for labor.

30+ mpg highway is not out of line for a DOHC, hell I get that in my VR4, stock and even now with 880cc injectors. That is of course assuming you are doing around 70mph, because I only get around 8-10 mpg when on above 140.

I was gonna say.....the day I get over 18mpg on the highway with my 360cc injectors, while not driving on my donut, I'll shed a tear of joy.

our cars run rich from factory settings. if you had a AFC, then by leaning out the fuel curve, you could save gas and improve fuel economy. that's one reason why a lot of VR4s have as good if not better fuel economy than base and SL models. that is, they either have an AFC or standalone EMS.

of course, its not really feasible to get an AFC or EMS for the base/SL models, b/c we really would not gain that much in performance from leaning out the fuel curves. Now if one did a TT conversion, then an AFC or EMS MIGHT be worth it. IMO, i'd rather get a VR4, then i could see spending the $1000 + on a EMS, b/c not only could i improve fuel economy, but there's so much potential for performance improvements once you can control fuel/air ratios, already having supporting mods (fuel pump, injectors, MAS).

I get around 20-22 mpg around town and every day driving. If I go easy I can squeeze 25. On trips I have gotten as much as 30mpg. But that evewn included some city driving and alot of 80mph cruising. And a few 100+mph sprints.

Now in a SOHC 80mph is about 3500 rpm if I remember right. Hopefully I will be getting the 16% 5th gear reduction soon.

EDIT: Oh yeah the DOHC is rated for better gas mileage than the SOHC mainly because they are roughly the same weight and the DOHC will get the car moving better.

has any1 heard about shell v-power gas?

there was a discussion of it somewhere in one of the technical forums, but there didn't seem to be alot of concrete information about it...just speculation.

Stealth brought up a good point. What grade of gas do you put in your car? Do you always put premium, sometimes, never? I always put premium in. I can tell a difference between 87 and 93 octane, even if others tell me it is a waste of money. I say, "If you can't afford it, don't buy the car." It's like a guy with a Hummer complaining about gas prices (which are a whole other story)! Do you put fuel injection cleaner in there regularly too?

ya i've heard about Shell V-Power. As to what benefits it gives over competitors' premium grade fuel...no clue. Personally, i think its just a marketing ploy to get consumers to buy Shell gasoline. Just like "Chevron with Techron." I'll stick to the low-price, quality, high octane fuel, as the prices of gasoline continue to rise. I think its hilarious that in Iraq, ppl blow up pipelines to piss of the Americans...and it works, it does piss of the Americans. Why? b/c that's why we're there in Iraq...to get oil. Hahaha, i laugh at you Bush! Random thought for the Subaru lovers: what kind of japanese sports car would our President like?... the George dubya RX, that's George W. RX!

U no what'd be nice, gas that cleans the inside and outside of ur car, and than waxes and buffs it for you, now that I'd be willing to pay 2.50 a gallon for :)
