Caterham Super Seven BDR (Ford)

Thanks for welcoming me to the board. Since it was mentioned in my previous thread, I thought I would share this one with you all. I spent about 2000 hours making it. There are no aftermarket parts, if it didn't come in the kit, I made it, except for the rims which I swapped from the CF Cycle Fender version. It is 1/12 scale. I machined tons of parts (OK, maybe pounds) from aluminum. If you include the bolts and fasteners I made in that count, there are literally thousands of extra pieces. The carbs & linkage alone has over 70 scratchbuilt parts.

Wow, look at those carbs....I'm blown away at the engine and dash detail. The bolt heads, timing gears, hose fasteners, sweet lord.
How did you mark the radiator hoses? The igintion box is wired, look at the throttle-return springs!

I keep finding new details everywhere...the fuel pressure regulator gauge, wiring harnesses, the wink rearview mirror..CRAZY!!!!!!!!!How did you make the air filters?

This is an incredible build of the Tamiya kit. WHOA ! Awesome, I may have to break down and get the Catterham 1/12 kit and just stop paying my bills and let my credit goto hell. Ok maybe not that far !

I saw the pics in Scale Auto Mag, they do it no justice.

Thanks all. Here's a few answers:
The hoses and wires were labeled with custom decals I created.
Maybe some of you have heard of "Scale-Master Decals"?
No coincidence...
The air cleaner screens are actually some of the parts I kept from the kit.
The coil and resistor, (I planned on making the stereo and didn't want any static), are scratchbuilt/machined aluminum.
(That is a blade type screw holding the resistor to the clamp.)

The master cylinder reservoir is cast resin with machined aluminum fittings and cap. The cylinder body is a modified kit part.
The seats are painted plastic and the houndstooth is again custom made decal.
The seat belts are made of tape and consist of 111 pieces of tape for each side plus hardware and custom decals.

Some other detail info, even the carb idle screw has a spring to keep it from backing out. The gauges are scratchbuilt copies of Auto Meters. The tach redline needle is adjustable by the center knob. Notice the needle sweep, all are mechanical except the volt meter and fuel gauge which are electrical.

The fuel pressure gauge is liquid filled. The mirrors are adjustable. The reflective license plate has raised letters and correct tags. The machined aluminum speaker box holds Momo Polk Audio speakers with graphite woofers.

That is one awesome build, I have just spent the last 25 mins looking at the detail.
Can I ask where you got the bolts from and did the detail like the oil filler cap come in the kit or was it scratch built if so how ?

I machined the oil cap and all the bolts (and everything else that looks like it was machined) out of aluminum, my favorite metal medium.
I also made the decal in the oil cap.

How did you do the raised lettering on the licence plate? I'm building a model as a gift for someone and have been trying to work out how to do this so I can make custom plates.

Well, I'm still amazed.
Are the gauges actually individually wired behind the dash?
Those are Auto-Meter Sport comps, right? I tried to duplicate some 1/24 on a 510 track car, and they look like cheese whiz compared to yours!

Got any pics of the brakes/brake/fuel plumbing?

Maybe I misunderstood, but you were going to have a functioning stereo in it?
Again I'm in complete awe at your work. It really humbles me, and inspires me!

can you please figure out a way of making pictures a slight bit smaller so i don't have to scroll. And then do it. Images like the licence plate you could have just trimmed. Lots of wasted space. Very nice work by the way.

To clarify, no the stereo does not function, but if it were a real car, I would have put the noise suppression resistor on the coil, (as well as one in the stereo wiring which is not visible, see "Not totally crazy" above...).
Many of the parts I made are modeled after the parts on my real car so exact measurements were easy to come up with.

Some more answers:
The fuel lines and heater hoses are modeled after off the shelf stock and are so reflected in the imprints, therefore no stock number, just names & code numbers, but the oil filter, for example, is the correct Fram part for the motor. The radiator hose # was my best guess that would fit from looking through available parts list. The spark plug wires are the same as I run on one of my real cars.
I spent about 2000 hours making it. Thoroughly enjoyed at least 1975 of them... Sometimes it made my brain hurt though...
...And I have started yet another Seven. I hope to make it even better than this one. So far I've only made masters for the seats and the wheel centers and cast some parts of them in resin. I'll post as I go...

Sorry, not many photos of the engine, at least in a finshed stage out of the chassis. Much of the top end had to be built into and onto the block after it was in the chassis. But I can offer this in progress shot...:

I know we touched on this before, but I'm making a 1:12 Skyline, which you may have seen ?
But what did you make the nuts and bolts from, as I'm finding it hard to locate Hex Bar is the correct small size.
Do you use a milling machine for some of these parts ? as only so much can be done on a lathe.
Those timing gears are awesome, are they sratch built or part of the kit, if Scratch built how.
Sorry for all the questions but we all have to learn from someone :)

Please do make a progress thread on the new Seven as, I speak for everyone I'm sure saying we would love to watch it build up in detail.

The bolts were milled from round stock, I've never seen hex stock that size either. The timing gears on this one are from the kit, but I am making a new set for the one I'm working on now. I'll use the mill for most of the work, maybe only use the lathe to cut them off the stock. - Mark
