Have read about pistons with Roller Wave designs, usually associated with Honda engines. What is it actually and how does it work?

Roller wave is the name endyn gives to their modified arias pistons. They basically deburr them. It's just a name, like how canon calls their printers bubblejets, etc.

They claimed that pistons with such designs can run on a wide variety of air/fuel ratios without attendant detonation... so it's just some turbulence-inducing channels on the pistons?
