What is the Clunk?

After breaking (not necessarily to a stop), and then accelerating again I hear/feel a clunk in the drivetrain. Would this be a u-joint or a transmission problem?

It's what GM calls "Norman Drivetrain Lash" :-(
The clunk I experience only occures when changing between 2nd and 3rd gears.

I've experienced the same clunk about 50% of the time since the truck was new (2001). GM has put out at least one TSB on this but I don't know the number. I never had any work done on my truck for this but a friend with a 2002 truck noticed it almost immediately and has had the dealer change the u-joints, driveshaft and also has had work done in the rearend itself. Nothing worked. The service manager at the dealership where I bought mine said that the "clunk" shouldn't affect the life of the drivetrain in any way. I've only got about 40k on it and so far it's only been annoying, but we'll see...

i've had a similar problem with the clunk in the drivetrain but mine does it just as i come to a stop and right as i accelerate. i've got 84k miles and it started doing it around 40k miles. everything still seems fine. had my transmission fluid flushed about 3 weeks ago and they didn't say anything when they inspected it before flushing it. i did read a technical service bulletin saying that i should replace the slip yoke (thing the u-joint connects to) with a nickel-plated slip yoke but some people here have said even that is only a temporary fix ... good for maybe 20k miles. also heard greasing it helps for a few weeks but will eventually begin to clunk again. we're just another unlucky customer that has to deal w/ a manufacturing default.

I have the same thing. It clunks only from a complete stop. But I only noticed if after I installed my exhaust. I donno if its just something not tight or if its the same thing you guys are talking about.

I've got a 2000 5spd with 93k miles on it. I got the truck with 60k and it has clunked since I got it. Had it looked at 3 times and same answer, "normal backlash". Changed the u-joints just in case but wasn't the problem. I don't mind the noise, just hate not knowing if I'll be stranded 100 miles from home.

Could this noise be coming from the slip yoke? I had a similar noise when slowing down and then resuming speed and the dealer regreased the yoke to clear it up. This was only a temporary fix though my clunk came back again after a while.

My 2000 does the same thing. I thought it was a caliper hanging up or something, but my calipers are fine. It only does it after accelerating from a complete stop.
You sure would think that GM could clear this up.
I have also been told it is nothing to worry about, but it is annoying!!!

You're right. Very annoying. Why should GM vehicles do it if other makes don't? GM is being gay with their excuses. Seems like my new Silverado has got more problems than my 1987 GMC S-15 ever did. I miss that truck.

it. I only got rid of it cuz I needed more power for
pulling my travel trailer.
I am almost thinking of trading down!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I believe that it is something to do with the 4WD System. From most of the posts here I gather that you guys all have 4WD's. My 2WD doesn't do this however, my 90' Blazer did it all the time. The only time i noticed it not doing it was when my 4WD was engaged. I think it has something to do with the way that the transfer case engages into the transmission but, I'm only summizing.
Anyways just some food for thought and my :2cents: worth.

Mine is 2WD. Does it mostly after stopping and then accelerating. Sometimes after slowing down quickly and laying back on the throttle.

first thing i would check is the spair tire. some times the cable strechs. this will couse the tire to swing back and forth during stops and take offs.
if that does not work check all the cv joints, if you like thay are u-joints, for slaping. chevy does not install grease zerks on them and after time the bearings ware out. all thay care about is getting the truck thru the first 3 years or 36k miles.

The noise is different, but I think the two problems are related.
Like when you shift from D to R, or vice versa.
I think that there is just that much play in the driveline.
It would seem to me that over time it would wear something
out...
I guess we'll see...
Might hafta go get a Ford!!!

Axle Housing Flex.
Jeeps with high hp (400) have the same problems.
The axle flexes causing the yoke to slip a little
Your u-joints bolts (stock) flex.
When you slow down everything is flexing back.
Why does low HP not do it.
Simple they cause less stress and take longer to build the flex.
Switch over over to all Tom Woods drive shaft and u-joints and YOKES!!!
Everything will go away. Of course it will cost about $3,000.00
What you have done is stretch out everything and have stress the steel.
On my chevy my yokes come with straps. I have not seen straps since 81 Jeeps. If you have straps that is the best place to start.
I can do a 1/2 mile burn out in my jeep in 4x4. The first time I did it I broke all 4 yokes and the bolts all broke from the straps. I replace with u-bolt and heavy duty yokes and not have one problem..
I hope I helped a little.
I am learning about these new chevys but suspension I know inside out.

I am sure you are right. It's driveline the ring and pinion bashlash, the best way to tell is drop the driveshaft at the pinion yoke and twist the yoke back and fourth yo may get as much as an inch of play, if so don't listen to GM open that cover plate and check wear on ring gear teeth, and the differential pinion shaft (not the pinion gear) if pinion shaft is sloppy you can expect a differential snap in future. And beleive me it's not a pretty sight.Oh and going to Ford is not the anwser, You think those trucks are trouble free?

I have a 2004 Crew Cab 5.3L and I here a clunk when the automatic transmission changes from 2nd to 3rd gear. Is this normal, or a manufacturing defect? If anyone has the Technical Service bulletin for it, could you please post a link or cut and paste it in here? Thanks.

I had the same problem with my 2000 Z71 4WD soon after I bought it from the dealership. It was used with 48k and a dealer installed 6" lift. I took it back to them with an extended warranty and they were reluctent to asume responsibility for the problem until I mentioned the fact that thousands of trucks have lifts and this particular dealer wouldn't warrantie there own lift kit. Anyway they did fix the clunk to the tune of $2,700. They said it was the yoke and some shims that have to do with the transmision and transfer case.

Just like the piston slap noise: Normal.
"This is normal operation. Do not attempt repair. This is from the sum of normal tolerances built into the various driveline components working together".
On a couple of my trucks I used to pull the driveshaft every so often and grease the splines with the special blue GM stuff, but it always came back. I'm happy that this HD doesn't seem to do it. Yet. Maybe the other noises are just drowning it out.
I heard it first on this very forum: Welcome to the Clunkerado Club.

Sounds like we are talking about 2 different clunks. One is when you accelerate from a stop and the other is when the transmission shifts from 2-3 or 3-2. My 02 Xcab Z71 and my 05 CC z71 both have the shifting clunks. It's most noticeable when you slow down and then accelerate, the transmission shifts from 3rd to second. It's also noticable when lightly accelerating.
Here's the TSB on this one. it's from 04 but I'd bet GM added 05 as well.
A/T - 4L60-E/4L65-E, 2-3/3-2 Shift Clunk Explanation
Bulletin No.: 01-07-30-042B
Date: January 16, 2004
INFORMATION
Subject:
Information on 2-3 Upshift or 3-2 Downshift Clunk Noise
Models:

This bulletin is being revised to add the 2004 model year. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 01-07-30-042A (Section 07 Transmission/Transaxle).
Some vehicles may exhibit a clunk noise that can be heard on a 2-3 upshift or a 3-2 downshift.
During a 2-3 upshift, the 2-4 band is released and the 3-4 clutch is applied. The timing of this shift can cause a momentary torque reversal of the output shaft that results in a clunk noise. This same torque reversal can also occur on a 3-2 downshift when the 3-4 clutch is released and the 2-4 band applied. This condition may be worse on a 4-wheel drive vehicle due to the additional tolerances in the transfer case.
This is a normal condition. No repairs should be attempted
The other clunk is the slip yoke on the driveshaft. I've read the TSB on this one, but I didn't save a copy of it. Dealers lube it and GM also has a nickel plated replacement.

Bottom line is that there seems to be nothing you can really do about any of the clunks, rattles, knocks, etc.
If the TSB states anything other than "Do not attempt repairs" the repair seems temporary at best. Lubing the splines does not last, many people that have had the yoke replaced say the noise is still there or has come back, etc.
The piston noise is downright embarrasing. Luckilly the cold manifold leak helps mute it.
Oops, don't get me going. Happy Friday!

GM is building trucks that are nothing but junk now-a-days.....my 2005 does the same thing with only 1000 miles on it, along with a host of other issues that GM calls normal. Why else can't they sell these things at retail but to have to discount them. Look at Toyota and Nissan... every model year there are more and more of these trucks on the road, why....because of problems like this that they call "normal". I'm sure they will figure it out sooner or later

If there "junk", nobody made you buy one. So, its your fault as an uneducated buyer that you bought junk, especially sense your feelings seem to go beyond the truck you are talking about. Go buy a 'Yota then, your chevy has plenty of trade in value.

I wish I had read all this before I bought... I bought a 2005 Tahoe and have found out I have a genuine "clunker". I had it in the shop 4 times before they told me about this 2-3 upshift or 3-2 downshift "clunk noise" that is "normal".
My question is - will there be any problems in the future. They say it is normal, but that type of noise seems like it would wear/tear at a more rapid pace.
any one found out anything on quicker wear/tear? New solutions?

You should still be under warranty

You shouldn't have to worry. These trucks will rattle, clunk, squeek and buzz for many many miles. :iceslolan

Every truck make has it's own set of problems.I found the chevy's to be the more acceptable issues. And buying Japan products is not even a consideration with me. If there were more people that would be loyal to USA goods we would still be living the good life of the 1950's. Where USA supplied 80% of the world market, and everyone could afford a nice home (almost everyone). Now we dump money into China's economy and in return we get low low quality junk, So when those of you that are employed in the manufactoring sector get laid off. And you drive home in your Nissan, blame yourself not George Bush.

HAHAHA!! Y'know......I don't know how true that is, but it sure sounds about right. :iceslolan
Every rig has problems, some people are just way more particular. :disappoin I just like to think I'm smart enough to know that even though I paid more for my truck than I wanted to, I'm not gonna expect it to never have a single problem or noise here and there. I'm just as worried over things breaking and having to pay to fix them as the next guy, but I'm not gonna sit around and piss and moan about it. People who have legitimate worries over a problem are normal. People who think that thier personal opinion on the economy and buisness is gospel because of a bad vehicle purchase are not going to be suffered easily by people like myself. Does it make a difference, probably not. But it'll kill a good BBS quicker than @$%& if all anyone does is come here to complain and whine about thier chevy and how it's all going down the crapper. :2cents:

Let's not open this can of worms again. Maybe it would help if so many of the parts on our GM vehicles weren't made overseas???? I believe it should start with the US manufacturer using US vendors on their products. When I disassembled the interior on my wife's Pontiac, I thought I was taking apart a Nissan. All of the components had "Made in Japan" molded into them.

I'm gonna pipe in here...I just bought an 06 Z71. I expect there to be some problems, but I also know what to do to get them fixed. I had an 01 Z71 that the speakers fell out of the doors 3 times. I could get that fixed forever because the dealer had record that it happened so many times under warranty. I also had the rear driveline clunk. I figured out what the fix was and told the dealer to fix it.. nickle slip yoke installed! I also had the steering column clunk. Greased a couple times, then I had them replace the intermediate shaft...gone. I research my cars issues and see what others have done to get them fixed. It's easier to get things fixed when you tell the dealer what you want when you bring it in. All of the above mentioned repairs were done by the same dealer. I let them try their repair and when it didn't work, I told them what to fix. I now have multiple records of the same repair issue while under warranty. Let's not forget the wonderful GM power window motors that burn out...when these things happen, tell them what to fix. Don't let them tell you what you need.

Good point Scott. It really pays to do your own research before taking it in for repairs. I'm lucky that I worked for a local GMC dealer for more than a decade, so I just pay a visit and my Tech buddies look up bulletins for specific complaints on their computer. Many times it is a bulletin that they haven't seen before, and may not have done the search for the normal Joe.

After owning a 1999 or newer GM truck, I would not hesitate to buy another GM truck!
for what its worth , this is my story.
I had a 2002 silverado 5.3 Z71 bought it brand new, great truck started the clunk sounds from slip yoke immediately, but after 9000 miles it started the pisto slapping too. It continued to get worse and at 30,000 miles it was slapping almost constantly. It was diagnoised by 5 diff. dealerships as piston slap, but GM wouldnt do a thing but give me a warranty.
When I first noticed it back at the 9000 mile mark i wasnt to concerned cause it would go away after a few seconds and never realy return through out the day. By the 30,000 mile mark it would slap at any start up and when driving you could hear it on deceleration or engine rev.
No other real problems though.
But since everyone was talking about piston slap and trans clunk noise and what i found on the web at www.pistonslap.com it spooked me , I decided to trade it in on a new 04 Ford F-150.
this truck ended up having a new motor put in it at 3000 miles, not a misprint 3000 miles due to cam phaser problems and main baring failure. Ford bought it back in full. Fords service dept and corporate customer service was first rate for me.
But I couldnt live with a new truck that just had to have a new motor put in it plus there were some other issues.
So I decided on a new less expensive 05 Dodge Ram Hemi.
With my new Dodge I ended up back with piston slap, that started right away at 500 miles and a bunch of other loud tapping, and knocking noises. Took it in and was told by Dodge that all Hemis make noises and have piston slap, and worse then any chevy ive heard, but since it started so soon and was getting louder by the week, I didnt trust the dodge drive train quality. My Dodge had way too many other problems also .
So I am back with a brand new 05 silverado Z71 5.3 aluminum block and so happy to be back with GM. 10,000 miles and no piston slap sounds no oil consumption but i do have the familiar clunk, but i can definately live with it.
After all ive been through with the other 2 trucks even if it develops piston slap ill deal with it, cause in my opinion GM is better then the Ford and Dodge. Ford pulling a close second. (Just my opinion from my experiences) .
My neighbors 01 Z71 just turned over 100,000 miles and has had piston slap since around 15000 miles, and clunk sounds from day one and it is still running strong, and my other friend has 130,000 HARD miles on his 01 with med loud piston slap and clunks, but still runs great, im pretty convinced it wont kill the motor.
I actualy wish I never got rid of my original 02 Z71 I was just getting used to the piston slap. It would have saved me some money too.
Just my story, hope it makes some of you feel better about your trucks and experiences.

I never had piston slap on my 01. What does it sound like? My 01 was quiet except for the steering clunk and the yoke clunk. After I got them fixed, it was as quiet as the day I bought it.

Sounds like a light rod knock or some other serious internal engine noise. I've dealt with it at the dealership for a decade and know that it is not a longevity issue, but when you hear it every morning you can't help but worry about your engine integrity. What if you were ignoring a more serious noise thinking it was one of GM's "don't worry about it" noises?
Not to mention the proud feeling when co-workers always ask you what the knocking is when you fire up your nice HD after work...
