I recently purchased an '89 Camry LE wagon with the V6 engine and automatic transmission. The car revs around 3000 rpm going 60 mph on level road. This seems a little high (RPM), I think, or is it just right?
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

See if you have the overdrive disengaged.

The O/D is engaged.
Anyone out there who can compare with their's with the same engine and transmission?
Thanks all.

I hate to repeat a question, but just to be sure, when it says O/D on dash it is off. You need to push it in so it does not display.
It is possible that the OD is still not working based on those #'s.

Put it in overdrive & count your gear shifts as you slowly speed up.......

Your O/D is not engaged. The newer Camrys have an O/D off light. The older ones had a light that indicated that it was on. Make sure you are doing what you think you're doing.

I'm pretty sure the overdrive is engaged. With the switch pressed in, there is no indicator on the dash. With the switch sticking out, the "O/D OFF" indicator is showing on the dash. I'm also pretty sure that the O/D is working, because while cruising at 35-40 mph, and turning the O/D off, the RPM's would go up. Switching it on, the RPM's would go down again.
I've counted the gear shifts also, and it shifts 3X, which means its going into 4th.
But do you all agree that 3000 RPM at 60 MPH is too high? Any ideas?
Thanks guys for taking time to reply.

Your torque converter should be locked up at 60 mph and your rpms should be around 1500. You should see your rpms stabilize at 50 mph when your torque converter locks up.
Maybe the problem is in your torque converter. When is the last time you flushed your transmission? Maybe it is due for a flush and filter change.
Also, transmissions can act screwy when you have a bad engine thermostat. Since they are so cheap and easy to replace, that might be something to think about.

For your reference, my 89 4 cyl automatic Camry rpms:
45mph-1700-1800rpm with O/D on
60mph-2200rpm with O/D on
60mph-3100-3200rpm with O/D off
45mph-1700-1800rpm with O/D on
60mph-2200rpm with O/D on
60mph-3100-3200rpm with O/D off

I bet the 4 cyl and the V6 have different final drive ratios, but typesix's numbers will be close.

Thanks in advance. That is fine my 2001 does the same thing. You should try to shift at 3500 in your auto it works pretty good.
