87 F150 Cuts out

my 87 F150 ocassionally at any time will just die on me and then wont restart for about 2 minutes, then it starts fine, usually keeps going until i shut it off, but some times dies again a few miles down the road

i also have a problem with the idel dipping low sometimes and the it likes to die, like it doesnt catch itself or something

and thoughts would be appreciated

The idle problem may be a vacuum leak, or the Idle Air Control motor sticking. In the absense of a vacuum leak, I'd suspect the IAC.

As to the stalling, that is most likely either the in-tank fuel pump, or the ignition module. To check which one, you'll need to carry a can of starting fluid with you. Next time it quits, spray a *little* into the inlet and try to start it. If it fires, the fuel pump is bad. I STRONGLY suggest if it is the fuel pump, that you replace it with a FORD pump, we have LOTS of trouble with aftermarket pumps.

i found a spark plug wire that was bad, and replaced it and that seems to have helped with the stalling part, but i still have a problem with the idel flucating, when my idel drops down to 600 it usually almost surges or something from 600 to 750 then drops and back up continously

The throttle body may be dirty. If you decide to clean it yourself, take it off and remove any sensors attached. Also, only clean it with mineral spirits or turpentine. Anything else will remove the coating inside and will really screw it up. A good soaking will not hurt it. Just remember to lubricate the throttle bushing with a little lithum and to clean out all ports and air bleeds. If an air bleed becomes plugged, it will cause an erratic idle.

Um, the throttle body has a coating on it to prevent crud from sticking to it. DO NOT clean it, or it will get far dirtier than it was, and quickly. Besides, a dirty TB has little if any affect on idle quality.
