From what I was told by a Volvo master tech was that the late 80s early 90s rear drives were like 165hp and if you put the factory "plus kit" on it you would get 190hp. they had two types of turbos; a Mitsubishi that could develope a max of 15psi and a larger Garret that would put out 18psi plus. Volvos also had stock intercoolers the same size as the radiator which enabled them to to handle all that boost and not predetinate.

I had two 89s a 740 wagon with the Mitsu and a 780 with the Garret. The 780 also came from the factory with the "plus kit" which would disable the waste gate at full throttle. The Mitsu had better off the line acceleration but the Garret boosted so hard starting at 2600rpm it usualy broke the tires loose at about 10mph or so.

To completely answer your question, besides the newest "R" the 1999 and 2000 "R" series made insane power somewhere north of 260hp, which was OK since they were all wheel drive. And they even offer upgrades to these.

The Volvo 1800E was a very unique car. It used the B20 2.0L engine with K-jet injection that produced about 118 HP (no turbo was available)

As for Turbo Volvo HP the 700 and 900 series turbo all usedthe B230FT engine which produced 165HP stock and about 180HP with the Turbo+ kit. The Volvo 850 T5 produced about 250HP from its turbocharged 5 cylinder engine
