How Bad is Neutral Dropping..??

Hmm.. How fast you think a tranny would blow in an automatic if it was in good condition. I want to try this with my 95 tbird, i wouldn't redline it-then drop to drive, just rev to 3000rpm or so-to get a jump.

neutral dropping is NOT the way to get a jump, the best way is to brake torque and bring revs up to about 1500 RPM, then release the brake and floor the gas.

Neutral dropping from 3000 RPM could break the transmission or driveshaft the first time you do it.

Thanks man..You know what, forget i even mentioned this stupid thread. I'm just gonna wait till i get a manual 96 camaro SS. I shouldn't even be concerned with draging or whatever with a car that only has 205hp and weighs 3700lbs.

Exactly what drd said. When your drag racing an automatic, you want to put tension/torque on the drive line, if you just do a drop, not only does it cause for a sudden loss of traction, it also does instant torque on the drive line causing damage really quick...

I had an 87 Mercury Linx station wagon with an automatic, and before I drove it to the junkyard I decided to experiment with it. I would drive 25-30, put it in reverse, the car would slow down and start going in reverse. I would rev it up to 4000 rpms, and put it to drive, it would squeel, but even after 30 minutes of constant abuse like this, the transmission still sounded fine, no grinds. Just don't do it too much.

wow.. im glad i found this thread when i did, i have a very nice tranny in my accord. low miles and all.. andits an auto(BOO) and i would Ndrop it to make my tires spin sometimes to show off... and so far its done nothing... but wow thanks for psting that!!
