clutch or throwout bearing?

Ok, rotorfloat's back after a hiatus (lost the website addy!).

On engaging the clutch I hear a quiet chriping or squealing noise, but it goes away after the clutch is fully engaged. It's sound is consistent with engine rpm.

Shifting gears, on occasion, I feel a bit of feedback in the stick as well as a slight growl as it passes into the next gear. This anomaly is does not occur often, not all the time like the squeak.

I don't suspect the clutch itself because engagement is fine, and there is no slippage. One never knows though.

Is it the clutch on it's way out or just a failing throwout bearing?

If the noise is there when you first push the pedal down and through atleast part of the pedal stroke but not there when your foot is off the clutch(clutch engaged), I would suspect the throwout bearing.

Noise when the pedal is all the way down (clutch released) but not when the pedal is first pushed, would likely be from the pilot bearing (assuming a roller type)

As you mentioned the chirping, then clutch engaging, it also sound suspiciously like fluid contamination such as oil, water, or clutch fluid on the clutch contact surface. Leak could be either at the rear main seal, or transmission input shaft. .....Good Luck

I never thought of contamination. I knew I was going to have to split the eng/trans eventually, hopefully it's just a cleaning.

I had a similar problem with my 88 cherokee. I had only 58k and the pilot bearing was the problem, it ceased up. What a pain getting it out. Have fun!

Split the tranny this weekend. Caught pneumonia for it. Ended up being the pilot bearing (the needle bearing type). The needles were gone, and just the race was left. So all the noise I heard was the pilot shaft shuddering around as the clutch engaged. There was a little bit of chatter marks on the clutch/pressure plate, but I had purchased a replacement clutch beforehand. Gotta love being a former automotive machinst, my old boss gave me the clutch kit (w/new pilot bearing) for $160 Canadian. Sweet. :smokin:

Also did my annual 'drain and replenish all fluids', rear brakes, replaced track bar, and alignment. Made for a lonng weekend.
