Eclipse advice

Hey what's up everybody, I just wanna ask some questions to people who know more than me...
I may acquire an Eclipse GS I think it's like 91-92-93 I don't know the year exactly, it has the DOHC engine... naturally I wanna turn it into a "race" car... so that's where this advice comes in...
I am getting this car for like $150-200 and its really not in all that bad shape, the only things that need to be replaced are things I am going to replace anyway, the major problem here is that its not a turbo, so what would you all suggest, just get a turbo put on the current engine (after some work is done to it of course) or just find a whole nother engine that already has a turbo on it and preferably some work done to it, and any suggestions on places to find these things for good prices would also be helpful...
Next, the transmission, it is an automatic right now as it sits, since I am trying to pump as much speed from this little hatchback as possible, would you recommend installing a manual trans or a different auto with a shift kit or something...
That's about all I have to ask right now, I am sure I will be back in a couple months after I have saved up enough money to get all this engine and trans work done with, also any other suggestions would be, as always, very helpful... thanks a lot...

I would say, DEFINETLY put a turbo on it. That will be spendy though. You will have to reinforce the crank among some other things depending on how much boost you want to run. Also, do not get the stock turbo they put on the Eclipse, piece of crap!!! Get a garret turbo or something of the sorts. You will also have to change the entire exhaust from the engine back, and don't forget to get an intercooler, a nice big one. To cool all that compressed air.
I would also suggest the tranny swap. Get a five speed transaxle in there. That automatic has no need being in a turbocharged car. I will also look up to find some good sites for you.

I'd suggest maybe looking for a new engine entirely because if i'm not mistaken the non-turbo eclipse didn't have the same engine as the turbo model. I think the turbo had the good mitsubishi engine and the non-turbo ahd the pussy neon engine.

As I recall they were both 2.0L DOHC engines. I know the turbocharged version was a 2.0L I4 DOHC.

Polygon, u are very incorrect, the eclipses came with the 4g63 2.0L dohc, the turbo models were the same engine but with different compression ratios and drivetrain, the starions came with the 2.4 turbo, but i am sure that u knew that. I would turn around and sell the car and buy a turbo model for what u sold it for, the engines are good for ut 200,000 miles if well taken care of. And u can make the car stupid fast for very cheap. 300hp will cost u less than 1,200 dollars or less than 600 if u know what ur doing. I will cost more to convert the car to a turbo 5 speed than to do what i suggested, but u can sell it to make money to follow my suggestions.

non-turbo eclipses have the chrystler 20a motor, same as the dodge neon, while turbos have the mitsubishi 4g63. both are 2.0liter. the 20a has hit respectable hp levels when turboed, but not as much or as cheaply as the 4g63. considering how little u paid for it, try finding a eclipse gsx or talon tsi u can get the engine/trans/driveshaft/axles out of and make it a turbo awd. swapping in a new v6 eclipse motor would be very interesting, with a lot more torque and low range power than your average eclipse, and would probably kick a lot of ass even before being turboed. but its not gonna just drop in, and your not gonna have the control of awd. best bet for the money is to prob try and find a turbo eclipse or talon motor to swap in, even if its only a fwd. but if u got the time and money to spend on it, swap in the new v6 cuz thatd be cool as hell, and if u do that i wanna ride in it!

ive never heard of any common problems with eclipses, at least not the ones with 4g63's. but my friends mitsu galant is on its 3rd transmission rebuild, about to need number 4 it feels like, maybe thats what your friend was talking about the transmission in the eclipses might be weak too...
btw anybody wanna buy a galant, i know a guy whos selling one...:D
