Hi All...

This is my first day as a member here...and this is my first post. I just got a 1990 PA/Electra for free this week as a gift from my father (he just purchased the new Rainier....LOVES IT!!) The PA has 110,000 miles on. Runs great....except for when it stalls out on me or shuts down while I am driving on the highway out of nowhere. WHen that happens I throw the car into neutral and restart it...The other day I was sitting in the car while parked with the car idling. It just totally shut off on me. Started up after about 15 minutes. My father just had the ECM replaced about 2 weeks ago before giving the car to me. ALl of the diagnostics came back fine on that. WHAT GIVES?? ANy suggestions/ideas would be greatly appreciated. I LOVE MY TANK AND NEED IT TO FEEL BETTER. Please someone help.

The new ECM is probably screwed... or the connection is loose... check there first.

The ECM was checked again...The Buick Dealership said it was fine. The car doesnt really stall per se...it just shuts down completely.

I have seen crank sensors cause random stalls on this enigne mainly. Some bad ignition modules otherwise a good engine with few problems.

What you can try is get the engine hot, take a long screwdriver and tap on the crank sensor, if it stalls out that would be your problem.

yea the dealer says its good, cause there not acually reproducing the problem so of course its good. If they don't see it, then they can't diagnose it plus if they were the one who installed it, of course they don't wanna take the hit on the bad ECM. I am sure the dealer techs on this forum are gunna crap bricks for talking about the dealer like this, but as the end user everyone knows its true.

I had same issue which was caused by an intermittent failure of the crankshaft position sensor. Replaced it, the problem went away. Be sure that the replacement is done by a competent mechanic.
