I want the SL65 AMG!!!!
Straight out of the factory!

I know the quality is kinda bad, but this car is amazing. 738 lb/ft of torque at its best.

BMW and Mercedes are in a hp war. It sucks though cause most of us people who would enjoy and use a car that fast cant afford them.

Yeah, that thing costs $180K! 604 hp and 738 lb/ft of torque is insane! The 4400 lbs make it slower than it should be. I wonder what the car would run if someone could get it down to about 3800 lbs. It would be in the enzo category.
I just saw a new SL55 AMG last night. It's one of the cleanest looking cars.

And guess what: we discovered in car comparo that they have a SL69 now.
As I said turbo>>>>>>>>na, poly, redneck, tatII feel free to lend us you opinion on that;)
Just that the E60 will be tuned for much better handling, and its sequential is sportier than the merc auto. They do catter to a bit different crowds.

You're right, the M5 will probably handle better but having a 600 hp, 738 lb/ft of torque BENZ is >.
However, BMW did a great job. NA 5L and 500 hp, that's amazing, and it's still just a V10. As a comparison, Viper's V10 engine is a 8.3L and it's a true performance car. You can take the M5 on family trips.
Imagine what they could do with turboed V12. That's getting kind of scary, to think they're coming out with all this stock.

Just imagine the future...a movie called "oh so furiously fast" comes out leading to a new wave of "street racing" However us regular racer-enthusiasts will mock them for thier sub 900 hp cars. Hah posers.

Hmmm...what is the SL 65 AMG priced at? With the little research I've done, it looks like this
SL 65, so it has a 6.5L V12. Further, its Twin (I'm assuming thats what bi turbo means) turboed. So its a full 1.5L bigger than the V10 in the E60, two more cylinders, and TTd. But it only puts out 612HP. So its bigger, TTd but only 112HP more.
Now, assuming Type S is right saying that the AMG costs $180k...
The E60 M5 is a NA 5.0L 500HP. It is generally accepted (here at least) that the BMW will be a better handling car. It is also assumed that it will run between 80-90K of the lot. So, with that extra 100K that you save buying the E60 over the AMG, you can make it hella faster than the AMG. Further, you'll still be able to seat four people other than the driver, put skis in the trunk, and look cool while doing it.
I'll take the ///M5, but thats just my two cents.

Yeah, but you can say that about any car. An enzo costs $1 million and you can make a civic faster than the enzo.
An sl65 amg, is an sl65 amg. An m5 is an m5. I'd take the m5 if someone was giving it to me of course over 95% of cars, but if they made me choose, i'd pick the sl65 hands down.
The sl65 runs mid 11s on stock tires, the m5 will probably run mid 12s.
1 second difference at about 120 mph is quiet a few bus lengths.
And don't forget the 240 lb/ft of torque advatange the benz will have over the m5.

And if I had to pick, I'd take the 5, becuase its more practical, and Mercedes still needed 2 turbos, 1.5L, and 2 more cylinders to make it faster.

Ok? I didn't say mercedes is better than BMW or the other way around. I just said which car I would pick. And you can't just say it like that. Once you get into those numbers, it's a lot harder to make more power. You can't just take percentages and calculate which one will make more power. After having said that, I do agree that BMW would probably be able to make a better engine than the SL65s, but that doesn't mean that benz has maxed out. They could be working on a 900 hp engine as we speak. Didn't mercedes make that 8-9 hundred horsepower V 12 engine for that chrysler supercar? As far as engines and this crazy german hp war goes, it seems like benz always makes the bigger engine and BMW is playing catch up. And Audi is playing catch up with BMW.
An S2000 makes 240 hp out of 2 liters and 4 cylinders. I'm not gonna say "Honda will make a 480 hp V8, the bmw needs 10 cylinders to make that much power"

I can say it just like that, because its a BMW v Benz thing. Screw the rest, its us verse them. And I understand that it gets hard to make bigger HP when your looking at bigger numbers, but I would expect more than 612 vrom a bigger turboed engine for 180K. If I'm dropping that much on a car, I would be looking for near 650 numbers. Again, thats just me.

I seriuoslly don't understand why people use its size and the fact that its turbo against it. The resons for that is to have a very broad powerband. ts a luxury car, and such an engine is far more suited for it. you don't want a hight revving screaming engine in this market segment.
And if anyone has a doubt about the merc's engine potential just take a look at the Chrysler ME 4-12 supercar since its using it.
And people need to take BMW off the pedestal, sure it is one of the best companies, and their tech is amazing. But I'm sure mercedes can match it, its just that their market segment is dedicated to luxury not sport. If you doubt mercedes' potential just look at their racing history and their current F1 presence.

Or if 612 hp isn't good enough for you, just get an SLR.
And if you don't believe in Mercedes' technology, then how about a supercharged V8 that produces 625 hp and 780 lb/ft of torque. Repeat "V8"

Look, Cassie wasnt really being offensive in his research, and neither was TypeS...However I think it is escalating to a BMW Vs. Merc Thread. When comparing the two cars, the merc is faster, the bimmer is cheaper, the bmw is toping on it's numbers for engine, and the merc has more status. Now thats my 2cents.

Yeah, and I don't even have anything against either car maker. The M3 and M5 are some of the nicest cars. I'd actually rather drive the M5 than benzes $120K SL600, which is a 4 door luxury car with a around 500 hp engine.

ahhh yes, the everlasting power argument! car companies downrate the horsepower on certain models to a certain degree. for example, the srt-4 is proly running close to 260 hp stock considering dyno numbers that i have seen. the nissan skyline (r34) is widely believed to be making more than its conservative 280 horsepower. moving onto the target vehicles, bmw sixes are very underrated, in my opinion, because they can put up acceleration numbers that dont seem right for their horsepower. a 225 330ci manual doing a 0-60 in 5.8 seems pretty fast for the weight and power the car has (a g35 manual coupe w/290-295 hp-more hp for 2005-runs about a 5.5).
the mercedes sl600 and the sl55 suposedly have almost the same hp ,according to the factory, but, there are people out on benz forums who have dynoed their sl600's and they are producing nearly as much hp as the car is rated for at the crank. another example is when mercedes recently ungraded its hp numbers on the e55 to 500 b/c test showed that it was much too underrated. car makers do downgrade hp numbers for insurance (albeit considering the money needed to buy such cars in the first place, insurance shouldnt b and issue) and similar reasons. one still gets the power that the car actually, and if they dyno it they can tell others about the real hp numbers w/o paying for them.
p.s. the engine in the sl65 can go much higher in terms of both hp and torque. mercedes had to scale back the torque because the transmission couldn't support it. in case anybody is wondering, i once owned a mercedes c36 (bought in 96-sold in 2000) and a bmw m3 (e36-bought in 2000-sold in 2002 *wasnt happy w/that one, but thats another story*).
i hope this helps the discussion, i would love to talk about the issue more

Why not just get a Turbocharged GSX1000RR (Superbike)
...thats like 300+HP with like 500+ lbs (including you)
run 7's all day for like $12,000......
But.........................
As for these cars, I think what Highrev said was perfectly right.

^ treynor's Supra, M5, and 1000+HP RT/10 Viper (at certain points - had to reduce for streetability) are all sold. The F355 he bought for his dad (in the picture).
"All" he has left are the SRT-10 Viper (wife's car), the S600 (he calls it his boring family sedan - run's 11's), and the recently-purchased SL65 (11's at 125+ stock).
Ben has a boring life.

As was said before they do cater to totally different buyer. For regular driving I think the SL65 would be my choice. Mercedes tends to have more plush interiors, and the powerband is very wide. The torque on the new M5 is around 380@ 6500 rpms while the mercedes is nearly twice that at a lower rpm. It also has an automotatic.
The M5 on the other hand would be the car you take out to really drive. With such a high revving engine, and a 7 speed manual tranny, and I would think a stiffer suspension it would be a totally different ride. If I had to choose though I'd take the mercedes myself, but thats just because I dont really like the new styling on the bimmers.
