ya well i got bored and decided to build a comp for my car im just tryint to think how im gnna power it , this prolly isnt the corect forums but who cares right? lol

well its a mini itx M10k prolly will use like 70 watts with everything pluged in , im tryin to decide on weather to go with an inverter , or just get a split relay charger to charge a gel battery that would be used for the comp , then just get a dc -dc PSU and put a 12v regulator , the main issuse is when you start the car cause it cranks out like up to what 19v which will start to fry things , and if i went with that how would i power my montior

I think Geno answered your question. You will require a power inverter. Although I would just buy a laptop if I where you cause they can run off cigarette lighter when the battery is low or just run off its battery. No reason to have one mounted in the car that I can think of.

ya i went with inverter , i just need to pick up a ac/dc adapter and i should be just about done , i just didnt want to spend money on a laptop

What jumps up to 19 volts when you start the car??

Power inverter is ok, but consider the power required to convert to 230V. Look for psu config. to reduce power consumption to 5V, thats your solution..

first thing , i want it like mounted but hiden away , with a little 8" montior , cause it looks pimp lol
and right now im considering just doing the other battery cause tryin to find a AC/DC 12v 7A adapter isnt as easy as i thought it would be , the battery puts out 12v 50 cranking amps i believe , i just gota get a gel battery or something i mean it would take days to drain the battery only pulling like 6amps , still not sure yet im still making a case for it at the moment, lol not sure why i decided to take on this project
hypsi , when you crank your engine over it bumps the voltage up from what ive read
*edit* i remember... war driving

sorry for the long wait,

Put a volt meter on your battery and then crank your car. The voltage drops. Current draw increases but your voltage will go from 12v to somewhere around 9-10v. think of as pushing a cart [starter], when the cart is empty, you have you full force [voltage] avaible to the cart. Then all of a sudden 500 lbs is added to the cart, the ammount of force [voltage] that travels through the cart decreases but the ammount of work [amprage] you do increases.

Get an amp clamp and volt meter and see for yourself. Don't use a multi meter ammeter, youll blow it. You can use it to check the voltage but not amps. Most only go up to 20 amps. your starter will draw well over that.

if your going by the voltage on the gauges ill tell you rite now they are off. if ur pushin 19v then the ses should be lit up and u should be havin electrical problems. put a multimeter up to the battery when you start it to get a true reading. i remember mine used to always read like 16 on the guage and i hooked up my laptop and it was only like 14.1 max. stock guages are not reliable at all for that stuff

I am curious - did you find the way to solve this power problem?
Also thinking about building the carputter for myself.

What ever you do you really dont want to plug it into the ACC. line because most cars will turn this on then off then on then off while starting, which is not good at all for the computer's power supply unit (PSU). It should be connected directly to the battery somehow. This may help. Someone that built an in car MP3 player that is a computer. An inverter is also a bad if you plan to use it for music because stepping voltage to 110VAC then the computer PSU brings it back down to 12VDC, which can bring noise into the system.

Link 1: These power supplys can be connected right to the car's 12V system and it will automatically do the rest to power the computer:

NOTE: the ACE-865V would be used in a car.

Wow, old thread, thought I'd respond anyway...1st post :)

I would recommend one of these power supplies I saw here: http://www.customcarputers.com/Power%20Supplies.htm
It appear that these are specificly designed for carputers.
