`01 Durango, got an exhaust question...

My neighbor has a 2001 Durango with the MagnumV8. I suggested that he get a different exhaust to make it sound better. I also advised not to go with a dual exhaust cat-back since this is the main vehicle that his family of 5 uses. So i was thinking maybe a Flowmaster muff with a single outlet using the stock location. That way its somewhat louder than stock but not too loud like duals. Would this be a good setup? Since i dont own a Dodge is this right or what are you comments? thanks

It is possible just to buy the muffler. For more details go to www.summittracingparts.com and put in the year, make and model and they should a correct application for that vehicle. Or go to www.flowmaster.com and see what they have.

i know its possible to just buy the muff but i am wanting to know what some of you guys used. Did you go with a flowmaster? Did you go with the stock pipe size? etc ,questions like that.

To decide what exhaust to do you need to know what you're trying to accomplish. Do you just want better sound (and how much), more power and economy, enhanced looks (tips), price etc. I'm an exhaust connoiseur and to me there is no sound like flowmaster however you do pay for it also certain exhausts are more efficient that others. If all you're after is sound a muffler is a good way to go. However if actual performance gains are desired then a catback exhaust should be used if not a complete system. Most systems use a greater diameter tubing aswell as mandrel bending to flow better. I have a 2000 durango 4.7 liter with a flowmaster 3" catback on it. The system uses a 50 series muffler. Flowmaster claims the 50 series with delta flow was designed for less interior resonance which is true but it is still very noticeable but I like it some won't (you can still hear the stereo just fine though when you're cruising). I then changed the tip to a custom 3.5 " by about 14" long tip and that made it even louder. My wife thinks it's too loud but I don't. I can hear her about a quarter mile down the road even at low rpm. The tip also added considerably more interior resonance but the tone is like nothing else out there. I had a guy stop me in traffic at a light to ask what I had on it and its not even dual. So you have got to ask yourself how much sound you're after and what you can live with on a daily basis.

Amidst your non stop bragging you mentioned that nobody in your town has an exhaust like yours. Here's why. It looks totally retarded. People only stare to either laugh at you or there amazed because they've never seen a truck without either haybales in the back or a pile of manure. Interesting reading here. I did the ususal internet search and survey, phone calls, and trips to the muffler shops. After sorting through the bragging, unkept promises and b.s. I went back to the Dodge Dealer and for less money ( appr.$200Can) I purchased the Borla dual cat back system. Plenty of rumble on start up and accelerating, and no annoying interior drone once the speed is maintained. Hard to believe this system gives it all. As you know its made of aircraft grade stainless steel, and warranted for a million miles.

As for the flowmaster system it has a good rating and I have had two of their systems on previously owned vehicles but I now realize why I prefer the Borla. It's because of less noise and drone compared to flowmaster.

It's just a six cylinder, the 1/4 mile time doesn't lie.
