Cold start problems

I'm having trouble getting my truck started. As soon as it starts, the rpm's drop very low and die in seconds. As long as I give it gas, the engine turns. I think it's the cold start system, but I'm not sure where to locate it under the hood. Any guidance would be appreciated.

In the carburator, there is a cold start electric choke. The way it works, you tap the gas pedal once before you turn the ignition on. This activates the lever in the electric choke. When you turn on the ignition, it should idle at a high rpm based on factory carburator setting. Normally around 1300 rpm. At least that's where I set it at.
If your cold idle rpm is too low, you need to check two things.

1. Make sure the electrical connection to the carburator electric choke is clean. There are two connections to check. One by the carburator located close to the firewall and two, the one connected to the alternator if you follow the wire from the carburator you should see it. Pull the connectors and clean the contacts.

2. The choke mechanical adjustment is off. The is an adjustment screw right under the throttle plate shaft close to the barrel. Use a flat tip screw driver and adjust it right after you press the gas pedal the first time. Screw it in. Then test it.

When the engine has warmed up, press the gas pedal once again and it should idle lower. If not, adjust the idle screw. Screw it in to raise idle rpm.
