ok i got it in, it took a couple of hours i guess, but could be done lots faster.
easily noticable compared to the stock shift. It turned out mine had even been shortened to start with and the TRD one is still better.
all i need now is a new leather gear boot.

is the trd shifter the same one that came stock on the 94 + models... i know there is a pretty big difference in them but im not sure if it is actually the trd shifter.... i cant immagine the shifter being that much shorter than what it already is on the later models

yep,
supposedly the TRD shifter is 30% shorterthan the old one, and 20% shorter than the newer one.
while its only a little shorter in lever length it moves the pivot point up the lever a bit which shortens the shift as well.
i think i might actually put in some spacers under the whole assembly to get the lever back up to stock height but retain the short shift.
i never said this, but my bosses subaru legacy actually has a standard shift that is about the same as my shortened one, he SAID he didn't get the short shift option but i think he must have. It may be a JDM subaru thing.

I have the TRD short shifter in both cars and I am quite pleased with it. It is not hard to install with basic tools.

Does the quick shifter take any of the knochyness out of shifting

It jus makes your throw shorter ... getting better tranny fluid will help some of the notchiness.

i found if anything it feels more notchy.
shorter leverage makes notch (force) feel bigger.

On ebay they have some aftermarket short throws, are these ok or do I need to spend 100 bucks for the official TRD shifter.

You know... I've actually heard positive feedback about those ebay ones. Check mr2oc.com... under the product review section.
