I have a 95 VR6 Jetta and it's been reliable the only thing is that VR6's are renown for 1. Coil Packs going out. 2nd Electric Windows going out, Cruise Control going out, and The Air Conditioner going out.
The plus's are totally reliable bullet proof Engine and Trannsmission.

I build Corollas all day in a factory (Great Cars) but I will not drive one home.
I am on my 8th VW(3 Beetles,1 Rabbit Diesel,4 Jettas)
My latest is the Best car I've driven of it's type.
The 1.8T is soo tuneable it's not funny.
I bought VW in the past to tinker, and I did.

The new one is a Bullet.
for a first timer I would say the J2 is my favorite after my 2003
