Problems Starting

94 Geo Prizm lsi 5sp. Checked records, new battery within last 18 months. Can't find anything about starter or alternator replacement.
Occassionally the car won't start. Turn the key and something clicks under the hood. Engine doesn't turn over at all.
Might just be a coincidence, but I think it happens after not driving for a few days. Putting the stick in neutral helps sometimes, but not sure if thats a coincidence either.
Any suggestions on what to check?
