Front ECU?

My Galant came up with an interseting problem: the highbeams and flash-to-pass stopped working at the same time as the intermittent and highspeed wipers (wipers only work on the "normal" speed).
Reading through the diag trees in the service manual and I can see that the two stalks themselves probaly aren't the problem, but the diag tree next calls to replace the "FRONT ECU'. I believe this is part of the Single Response System (is that what it's called?).
Anyone have a clue what's going on? I'd love to get a part number to replace if possible. I really don't want to take this to the dealer.
Thanks in advance,
Peter

The ecu is the computer basically. Usually there is one for the tranny and one for the emissions and electrical. If its talking about the main computer then that gets expensive. A new one can run you upwards of $600. I recently had my tranny comp rebuilt and the price was $160. I believe the company online is directauto.com. The company it sends to is in california its called python injection, and the can rebuild the main comp for only $160. If this is your problem and i don't know that it is. This may be a good option for you. Good luck

I finally took it to the dealer, who said that the "Front ECU" needs to be replaced. This is an ECU that lives on the steering column and runs just the various switches on the steering column. It's around $185 for the part and 3 - 4 hours labor to replace.
I hope to get it back this week. Sigh.
I've never heard of having an ECU to run switches. Seems like a pretty good moneymaker to me. Never ran into this with any other car before. Maybe it's time to trade when these things start going bad.
