hello guys and girls. i am new here on this forum. im alwasy under mustang, camaros and stuff like that. i wanted to get a few questions out to everyone so i have a wider area of help. i am redoing a 74 camaro. after i get it painted, i am going to put back all the intterior. i re did everything from trim, door panals, new racing seats, dash, steering wheel, subs, radio, .....everything. i have the carpent for it and wanted to get some help. its not the factory two piece set, i got some cheaper black carpet i have to mold and try to get it to look right in there. when i took up the carpet, there was underlayment fiber stuff there. its pretty crappy so i got new from a local carpet store. its just stuff you can use for the house, not the foam, its fiber stuff. also the black tar stuff i took out. do i need to put them back in under the carpet? what are they for? is it for heat protection or a fire stoper? i dont know, any help will help, thanks

The black tar stuff dampens road noise, you don't need it but it quiets the ride. If you choose to, you can replace it with something lighter and better like Dynamat. Also, you will save yourself a huge headache if you go with a pre-molded carpet.

2 good suggestions.

Dynamat extreme is spendy, but will definatly cut out a lot of road noise, worth the weight IMO. Also, a premolded carpet WILL svae you headaches. If you are trying to carpet it with what you have, you'll have to peice a cut and sew carpet...cut the individual patterns for each section. You'll cut different pieces for the floor pans, the sides of the tranny hump, the top of it, etc..Then cut the carpet to the patterns, snd sew binding around the edges. Glue it down. You have to make sure the patterns are correct too, or you'll end up with little gaps. Cut and sew carpet can look nice and higher end, lots of hot rods use them. However, they are harder to do. By far the easiest way to do it if you have no experience is a molded carpet kit.

However, if you insist on usng your carpet, it can be done, but you'll have to do a cut and sew carpet. Carpet padding/sound deading foam for cars is pretty cheap, like $10 a roll yard most, if you can find it and want to use it. My boss has found this water heater insulation very useful for all this, it's from home depot of all places. He just did a white 47 or 57 chevy pick-up in it for sound deading, etc for a customer.
