My guess is a fried battery. Most likely they suggested starter since that makes them more money :)

Test the battery first. Sometimes they short out and don't take a charge, nor do they transfer juice when you jump them. If the battery tests fine, then the next thing I would test would be the starter. They get old and draw too much amperage and you get that click (or nothing at all).

Also, seeing a spark is not necessarily an indication of enough power. Could only be 3v there. Seeing a spark may also be an indication of a serious short in the amp line. It could be enough drain to suck the power out of a battery, but not enough to blow the fuse. Try all of the stuff you tried before with the amp disconnected.

Curtis,
I would definetely suggest you go to http://www.ineed1.com/quikmechanic.html.

They offer quick answers to car problems. They helped me out when I couldn't figure out why my car temperature would rise when I come to stop, and be ok when driving. You'd think it would be the other way around, Anyway, I waste more than a $1 a day on junk anyway, so felt I could afford to lose it if anything. It's better than going some of those mechanic who tell you garbage, and charge you big money for nothing, or worse a shady tree mechanic with no real training.

Good Luck,
Chutch

What year mustang, could it possibly be the starter solenoid? its a 3"x3" black half cylindrical / half spherical box thats in the general location of the starter. I would see if you could jump that and start it...

......wen hooked up to jumper cables car has power but as soon as i dont have cables on car has no power

I think this is the key.

I would disconnect the amp first, then get the battery checked.
Some places like Advance Autoparts will check this for you.

If possible, can you swap another battery in the car and try to start it?

Also, make sure the alternator is charging the battery after you get it running.
