im thinking of selling my 95 firebird to buy a newer gtp. the only problem with this is that i refuse to have an automatic. i cant think of any front wheel drive 3.8s that come with a manual from the factory to use the trans out of. does anybody know of a car that may have slipped my mind, or know of anybody who has done a manual swap. thanks

thats what i said when i started looking for new cars, no autos, but i love my gp. The only car i can think of w/ a 3.8n/a w/ a manual is a camero, but of course thats rear wheel drive. So in your search for a gtp in manual i think you are looking at a completely custom job, but it would be cool.

The only Grand Prix I can find in all their books that has a manual shift is the GTO. And that sure isn't a 3.8
I think the GTP and GT would be great. But as always, they don't want to hear what we want. ONLY what we will buy.

There is one on Ebay (under GTP) for $20.00. It's the one I have.

At the risk of sounding like a newbie (I am) What is a shift kit and what does it do? I have thought about trying to get a manual tranny for my GTP but it seems like that would not be a good route.

It beefs the shift of your stock trans. Don't use the heaviest duty one. I did and thought it would break my neck in short drives to the store. But it sure makes a differance.
Good luckhttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v425/kustomkid54/1998PontiacGrandPrixGTP002.jpg

Didn't theearly 90's pontaic grand prix's with the 3.1L come with an optional 5 speed? That would probably fit, but need to be built well first.

unfortuneatly the 280 Torque kills most manual Trannies out there on the market

but be patient....I hear GM is in the process of beefing up their tranny line for the FWD Vehicles

hmmm, perhaps the manual from the G6 GTP would work in it, but we wont know for a couple years when it comes out.

i realized that theres a few things i dont know about shift kits. first off can you still just put it in drive and just cruise, or is it more like a manual where there is no option but to shift? how hard are they to install? and finally what should i expect to pay for a good one?

wait actually its coming out this spring, and its a 3.9 liter engine I dont know much about engines but perhaps becuase of the close sizes the same transmition would work?

when it comes to swapping transmission the thing your mostly concerned with is alignment. this means your looking for something with the same bolt holes and pattern. you need a good clutch and tranny alignment to engine or else you'll have some big problems. i think your looking at displacement numbers, 3.9L and 3.8L, but that doesn't mean the shape of the engine blocks are going to be the same. it just means that they have similar bore and stroke size. but i hope it's the same, luv to have a stick in my gp and it better be a 6-speed too.
