2000 S10 - advice

Traveling Emergency

Greetings everyone,

I've never had one problem with my vehicle.
As I was passing through Tucson, AZ en route to Los Angeles CA this weekend, I noticed an odor of hot water, wondering if it was the vehicle ahead of me, all guages were stable. Upon fueling up, leaving the gas station.. not 2 minutes after... I noticed my guages suddenly go apey, pulled off the highway and saw white smoke coming from under the hood. Called for assistance, towed vehicle, Pep Boys diagnostic says it is spitting water from the head.

I realize the potential damage if the guages had been stuck, for how long I have no idea.

QUESTION:
Is there a way to assess the damage myself, trace the leak
&
Do any of you know what the average cost of replacing head gasket on a 2000 S-10.

actually. where can I look [ if anyone is in Tucson ] to find a reasonable cat to honestly look into my situation

at least a second & third opinion would be good to know before letting someone get up in it and make a further mess

i'd never force a vehicle to move if overheating. thats where the bloody guages come in.

i'll get that stuff sent to those who've helped. you wont regret it

for those still able to advise, let me know if you know the best way to troubleshoot a recently overheated,

If it's a 2.8L about $130.00cdn, so around $80.00us for a complete gasket set.

For a 4.3L about $96.00cndn or around $60.00us.

They do make top end gasket sets, but I always buy the full set just because they don't cost much more, and you never know when a leak will spring up.

You should also get the heads machined, that could cost any where from around $40.00 for a set, to over $200.00 a head depending what is wrong.
