90 xj abs pump...

Newbie looking for answers about ABS pump. Hello all, I just came across a '90 XJ LTD, 182,000 miles, but still running strong, for a good price ($500.00) XJ has a hard pedal, the seller said they think its a bad connection to the ABS controller, which is doubtful, since the seller is not the owner of the XJ, and knows nothing about it, and I am pretty sure that it is the ABS pump assembly, that was the cause of so many probs for XJ owners, and recalled by the NHTSA, but I'm no mechanic. My question is, how can I simply diagnose if it is the pump gone bad, or something else. Not a cheap fix if it is the pump, just want to know what I'm getting into first. Is the vehicle safe to drive (cautiously) if the pump is gone? Kinda like having manual brakes? I want to get it home without running over anyone! Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

Is the ABS Light on? If it is you will need a Scan Tool to read the codes. Cant self read this one. Ithe light is on the ABS System wiil disable itself and normal braking will occur. You will have brakes like a vechile with without Abs.

my 89 cherokee is the same, abs pump is not working, this is a major problem for 89 - 90, i have looked into it and found that the abs pump and some other abs parts can be fixed at the dealer for no charge. This was not a recall but contact your dealer and talk to them.

The problem was another valve that fails and causes the system to loose pressure, therefor making the pump stay on longer and longer until it stays on all the time and finally fails.
