Hey, as yall have read in my previous post.. my malibu just died the second day i had it. Well, turns out, after trial and error, that the gas gauge is at fault. My car runs out of gas right around the quarter-tank line. Somtimes a little below, somtimes a little above.
Is it the gauge, or somthing messing with the delivery system? like a dirty tank??
PLease HELP!
***I dont know if this is an american car thing cuz this is my first one, but when idling, is it supposed to kind od stutter.. It has 130,000 miles but my celica had 190,000 and it idled smooth. Thers no real stutter in the rpm gauge, but outside the exhaust kind of cough's.
Thanks again!

the fuel sender is bad. it is a module assembly that includes the fuel pump and strainer. It requires the tank to be dropped in order to change.

Hey, whats the fuel sender? Do you mean sensor?
How would i be sure that this is the problem?
Thanks!

Rough idle needs tune up. Gas guages are notoriously inaccurate. If you have a trip odometer fill the car go 200 miles fill the car.Estimate your gas milage. I drive all my cars with the trip odometer for fillups.

I had the same problem in my 1999 foir about 2 years. Whenever it reached 3/8 tank, it would go wild. I used trip Odometer for awhile. Filled up at 270 miles. It is the sending unit. The part costs about $140 at dealer and about $70 to install at Pep Boys. malibus are notorious for this (among other things!).

I bought a 2004 Malibu in June of 2004. Just recently, I too started having issues with my gas mileage dropping dramatically. This will be the second time that i have brought it into the dealer to be fixed. From what i have heard, it is the sensor that is shot, causing my car to to fill all the way to its capacity, thus i am getting poor gas mileage. I went from 330-400 in city driving per tank to barely 300 miles. The first time, they told me that there was nothing wrong, and that it was bad gas. I will keep you all posted as to the progress of me yellign to get this fixed.
