i found an ex cop car 1987 crown victoria that has 5.0 engine, but is automatic. i was thinking of buying and possibly trying to drift it, first i would need to know if anyone else thinks this is a good idea, or a really bad one, i've herd things like the minute i get it sideways it'll probably flip. second is i need a manual transmission, since its the 5.0 engine i would be able to get one from an older mustang with the same engine and it would be abel to fit in right? i will probably find more ?'s but i'll try the crown vic' forum.

^I say go for it
If it doesnt drift as well as you hoped, just know a v8 RWD car owns the burnouts.
Or drop in a rotary into the crown vic?

Go for it. I was trying to get a friend to do the same thing. There should be plenty of spare parts available, and not only will they be cheap, but go-fast parts for the 302 V8 shouldn't cost much either.
With the low-end torque(especially after some power mods), you might not need a manual. Try drifting it using manual shift between 1st and 2nd before you look into a swap. There's a guy in my area who does very well drifting an El Camino this way(won Drift Showoff).

I dont think it would flip any easier then any other car.
Edit: I mean it is a cop car. Think of all the crazy shit cops do with them.

VQuick's not kidding. One of the top drift teams in the states is team Bubba Drift with their infamous supercharged El Camino. They run an automatic and do quite well.
Also, Bob Bondurant competed at the SCCA Formula Drift event in Houston with a newer Crown Vic. You shouldn't have too many problems having fun drifting with yours.

damn you, you said it faster than i did.
but i will say this: dont put a rotary into the crown vic. the car is to heavy for the little torque that rotaries make (unless its turbo or >3 rotors)
its going to be cheaper with the 302 anyway its got more parts availiable than a civic.

the first things you're going to want to get is a Limited Slip Differential and a way to stiffen up the rear suspension or else the car will just roll sideways and one-wheel peel instead of drifting.

Word. At Team Bubba Drift's site, they list a few of the suspension mods they needed to stiffen the rear end on the Caballero. That might give you an idea of what you'll need to do to the Crown Vic to drift it.
There might be some info at the Bob Bondurant site, too.

First of all dont even think about trying to drift the 5.0 was not ment to be drifted and secondaly you cannot get a Ford motor for a Chevy car.
If any thing you will want to consieder a 4cyl. import for drifting.

Mind explaining why?
If any thing you will want to consieder a 4cyl. import for drifting.
Tell that to Sam Hubinette, Rhys Millen and Ken Gushi, who drift American cars with V8s(Hubinette had a V10). What about top Japanese drifters like Ken Nomura and Takahiro Ueno who use I6 engines?

actually, if u dont remember, bob bondurant is an older dude, and he didnt drift @ the showoff, his grand son did, James Bondurant...... i know cause A) im friends with him, and B) cause i work there as a mechanic for those so called automatic crown vicks..... the crown vicks arent automatic they are 5spd. and they dont have a stock or slightely modified engine, they have a late model mustang engine with a supercharger... i know cause i helped setup the cars for drifting and i maintenance them everyday........ the car also has stiff ass suspension setup, and we tested and tuned for months on how to get the right drift setup...... and James knows this cause ddiiirrrr! he was driving.. he said it is soo hard to drift em the way u want stock.... unless u have the skill.... i drive them on the track everyonce and awhile and they are super driftable, with those listed mods... (they also had a rigit as hell roll cage) but a lighter JDM vehicle may be ur best bet, good luck

bob did drive one of the cars around (didn't compete), his grandson is in charge of the program at the school, and did most of the driving out there. it's pretty cool that you know him though! i've only met them a few times, very nice people though.

rotaries are torqueless, and torque is what you need in a heavy ass car. leave the v8
