Shifting in Automatic

I have an automatic, and I sometimes put it in 1 when stopped at a stoplight. Then take off and put it to 2, then D. Does this hurt the tranny or the engine? I dont do it much, only when there is some car next to me who wants to race.

Thanks

Ya but you can stay on the 1st gear until it hits the red line, then switch to 2nd until it hits the red line. So wouldnt you be getting faster acceleration here?

You're right, by doing that, you can hit redline, and depending on where the power band is on your car, it may help significantly.

Let me tell you this. Don't do it often. Eventually what will happen is your tranny is going to get worn out. If you wanted to shift, you should have gotten a stick.

I believe I heard someone say that because of the shifting from first to second and so forth, he was accelerating before the gear kicked in and started to strip gears. Think about that when you decide to do the racing again.

I wouldn't do it, at least not too often...the best way to take off in a auto. is just to keep it in (D)rive and mash the pedal down when light turns green. Another thing you can do is, power brake it, hold brake and gas at the same time, at around 2k rpm and release the brake and mash the pedal when the light turns green, you shouldn't do this too often either, its not good for the torque converter, this should be a track only method, good luck :flash:

I had an automatic G20 for about 2 years. The way i found fastest off the line was to just keep it in drive and mash the gas. I tried powerbraking and going into 1st, then to 2nd and then drive, but neither of those two techniques resulted in a lower time. I think the reason power braking doesn't work too well in our car is because you are still at too low of an rpm, whenever i tried it just bogged, now my dad's 300zxtt on the other hand   :D

our cars shift at redline anyways so theres no point in shifting it. all ur doin is hurting the car. jus mash the gas pedal

I agree....leave it in D and just put the pedal to the metal and it red lines anyway before it changes.
