i have a 1995 cavalier 2.2 L, recently the timing chain tensioner plastic guide broke off and got in between the cam gear and the chain, replaced both gears(cam and crank) also new tensioner, and new chain. after install, engine turns but no compression, checked timing it was fine, marks line up. just no compression, checked with a gauge. i am wondering could all the valves be bent?

I would bet your timing is off. If the valves were bent there would be a lot of knocking going on. Pull the valve cover and rotate the engine by hand or use a remote starter to bump it along. Watch the valve train, if one is bent it won't come back up and the rocker arm will be just hanging there. Good Luck.

both timing marks are right on the button, cam at 6 o'clock and crank at 12 o'clock. rockers move when i remove valve cover. car has ignition coils not distributor, so i can't check that to see if it is on number 1 cyl. is there another way?

i recently took head off, and low and behold, there was 7 valves bent, 4 intake and 3 exhaust. gotta go redo them.

that's the problem with interference engines. If the tensioner goes, the pistons hit the valves and the motor is toast.

You can check timing by watching cylinder one. Since you indicate the timing marks are in the right position it would be unnesscary to do so. Good Luck on the valves. The timing should be good for another 200,000 if repaired properly.

Please don't bring back threads that are FIVE YEARS OLD!!!

The 95s were only equipped with the 2.2 OHV or the 2.4 DOHC. The 2.2 OHV is chain driven.

Thanks for the info. The thread has not been closed, therfore it is still open for discussion.

You're very welcome for that info, however, had you read the user guidelines (http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/guidelines.html), you would have read the part about "posting in closed OR outdated threads", which clearly states:

"Please avoid posting or voting in outdated threads. It merely clutters up the message board and makes it more difficult for fellow members to sort through the vast amount of information contained on the boards. If you have new and important information to add regarding a past discussion, feel free to start a new thread and if need be, add a link to the original thread."

I swear there used to be a time limit on that, and I think it was 3 or 6 months.

The reason for this rule (IMO) is: You want to know the camshaft configuration and if it is belt or chain driven. By adding on to an old thread, you make everyone read the old posts just to answer your question. Had you started a new thread, and asked "do the '95 Cavaliers have a 2.2 OHV or 2.2 DOHC, and is it belt or chain driven?", you would have gotten a straightforward answer, and not had to come back and claim that any thread which hasn't been closed can "legally" be posted in, then I had to come back and type all this, and there's a good chance (based on past experiences) that you'll come back again, type something incoherent in all caps, and then Classicrocjunkie will come and close the thread.
