Strange Event - Electrical Short

I have an '85 Suburban 454, stock
While driving, the ground cable to the battery broke free. It struck the post and wire at the top of the alternator. Obviously the truck died. I re-grounded the battery and attempted to start, to no avail. The lights work (both dome and head) but nothing else. I connected the jumpers between another suburban to see if I had blown a battery cell or something - but this didn't help either. I checked the fuses under the dash and they are all fine. Any other ideas? I wouldn't be suprised if the Alternator has gone, but it seems I should at least get a buzzer when I put the key and the door open - regardless of the alternator.
Any help?
