Cold starting blues

If my car has been sitting for awhile, I have problems. I have a Haynes manual, but it's too general.
It usually takes four or more tries to start. The first two tries the oil pressure gauge stays at zero if that makes a diff. The third time, I'll get pressure and the engine almost starts, but not quite.
If someone has any ideas...input would be appreciated.
