Replacing Stock Radio

Hi,

I have a 2000 Elantra GLS wagon. I'm trying to take out the stock radio and replace it with a CD player. I ordered and received a harness to go from the connector in the car to the back of the new radio with 2 ISO connectors. However, when I connect everything, the radio lights up, but there's nothing on the display and nothing through the speakers. I'm wondering if the connections in the adapter are right.

I've searched for a schematic of the plug in the car, but the colors of the wires in the car match nothing I've seen by a longshot. Here's what's in my car:

Can anyone help me decipher this?

Also: I bought the car in the US, but have since moved to Germany. Could this be an issue? Since I bought the new stereo and adapter harness in Germany, could it be wired for a possible European-type connection? Would there be any reason for that to be wired diferently from US models?

Hi, welcome to the forum,

According to Hyundai Webtech (http://www.hmaservice.com/webtech/default.asp), that connector should be # M43. The diagram you provide is the male side of the connector. On Hyundai webtech they show the female side of the connector which is why the numbers will show from right to left.

Unfortunently the schematics in Hyundai Webtech do not show what the colors of the wires are, but I am certain that the connector M43 is the one in question, so the pins and their description should help you out.

Thanks for the help. I wired everything as listed. Unfortunately, for some reason, the radio buttons light up, but there's nothing on the display, and nothing coming through the speakers. I brought the radio back to the store where I bought it, the guy tested it, and it all works perfectly.

Is it possible that there could be a problem due to the fact that I bought the car in the US, but the radio was purchased in Germany? (we moved here and brought the car with us) I was under the assumption that it should still work because it all is 12v.

Here's something I just noticed: In the back of the stock radio there's a 7.5A fuse. In the back of the new unit, there's a 15A fuse. Could THIS be the source of my problems? I need to check the fuse panel in the car.

The fuse in the panel was a 10A. I changed it to a 15A, but nothing changed. So much for that.

I can tell you that Hyundai wire is a Standard.
There is not any type of incompatibily with the radio conections.
I do assure you, this is a simple problem, and I'm sure if you go to any Installer he will not have any problem to connect the radio OK.

I don't believe it. I found the problem.

Today I took the car to the shop to deal with a transmission problem. While I was there, I brought up this problem. Naturally, I plug the new HU in, and it works!! I go back home to finally finish this nightmare, and it doesn't work.

Here is where the problem was: The new HU came with a sleeve. You mount the sleeve to the car, then slide the HU in. However, in my car, there's nothing back there for the sleeve to grab onto..just 2 screws on each side. So, I took the 90° angle brackets off the old HU, and mounted them on the new one, not using the sleeve. Apparently, there's something involving the sleeve and the clips mounted to the HU that causes it not to work if not connected.

Which leaves me back at square one...trying to figure out how to mount it.

Actually, it's all in. The problem wasn't with the sleeve. It was with the little clips that screw to the side of the HU that the sleeve latches onto. I was able to attach the old stock brackets over the clips and screw them into the car. Everything works now! One cool thing about this HU is that it has a USB port so I can just plug a memory stick in and play tunes off of that.
