Check Engine Light

Hello,

I have a 2002 Hyundai Accent. I took it to an xpress lube yesterday and had the oil changed, the transmission fluid changed and the fuel injection system cleaned or whatever it is they do that. After they finished, the check engine light came on and will not go out. The mechanic there said that it probably came on since they got in there and worked on it and the sensors can be sensitive. He disconnected the battery for about two minutes to see if the computer would reset but it did not. He tells me this is normal and the light will go out and there is no harm being done to my car. I was told to come back in a few days in case it had not gone out. I want to know if what he says is true and that by messing with it caused the light to come on and will it go out on its own. I have also heard you can disconnect the battery for 15 mins or more to fix this, but that is a rumor. Can anyone help?

Thanks,

Jack

Well, if you have an automatic, I hope they put Hyundai transmission fluid in, or they will be buying you a new transmission in the near future. Hyundai's must take their own fluid, or they won't last long at all. We've replaced several that other shops had to buy because they put in the wrong fluid, and some never made it out of the parking lot. Anyways, more than likely it's something they did that caused it to come on. It is not, in any way normal for the check engine light to come on after a service. Check the gas cap, they could have left it loose, could be numerous vacuum hoses or sensors that they might of unplugged. Depends what kind of fuel injection cleaning they did. Did they just put a bottle in the tank? Or did they actually tap into the intake to clean the throttle body and intake. I'd take it back to them and have them fix it. Or take it to a Hyundai dealer and have them pay for it.

With concerns to the fuel injection, I think I saw them to both. I know they put something in the tank, but they were doing an overall inspection, so not sure what they truly did under the hood. As for what kind of transmission fluid did they put in, I hope they put in the right stuff. I had no idea that Hyundai's required a certain kind. I will definitely ask, cause I will probably have to go back I am sure. Is there any validation to the battery being unplugged and resetting the computer, or is that something I was just told to make me feel better?

Unplugging the battery can reset the computer is most cars. Make sure you keep it unplugged for about an hour. However, if there is something wrong with your car, it'll come back on when you hook the battery back up. It might take a little while, depending on what the problem is. The car goes through periodic checks of different systems. It depends when that system that has the problem is checked.

I wanted to thank you for the helpful advice. I called the xpress lube and they told the what transmission fluid they used which seems to by Hyundia compliant. Secondly, I went out and discovered that the gas tank lid had not been secured and so the engine check light went out. So I thank you for your help and advice.

Hope so. A few companies claim that their fluid will work in Hyundai's, but I don't trust any of them.

I hope so too, but I doubt it. Any place that says its Hyundai compliant is not. You should check the following threads.

if i had to make a guess

when i do a fuel injection cleaning i have noticed that Oxygen sensor codes set as well as misfire codes

the chemical that are used can cause false codes

Are you burning Crude Oil in that thing bro? Don't mess with the transmission fluid and though I would be loath to recommend any service at Hyundai after the service I've had at several stealers, I'd have to say it would be prudent to spend the $75 and have them do the tranny fluid once every 12,000 miles. I drive a stick thank God. As to fuel injection cleaning - YOU HAVE A BRAND NEW CAR DUDE. Unless you have money to burn in which case please send it my way and I'll sell you a case of STP for what they charged you. All the best. Don't believe the hype. Look in your Owner's Manual. Severe Maintenance Schedule Section in TOC. Follow like you are Moses listening to a burning bush and you will be fine. All the best. :smokin:
