VR4 vs. FAST Civic

I decided to write this one after reading the story by the guy who lost to the Kia (and then beat it, good job). Most civics I run into epidimize the term "ricer", but here's a story about one that works GOOD.
A buddy of mine has a good friend, who owns a '99 Civic hatch. It's black, projector headlights, subtle wheels, some tint, a very clean looking car. He swapped an H22 into it (a 2.2L prelude engine, producing 200hp), an intake, exhaust, MSD ignition, V-TEC controller, cam gears, etc. Anyway, it is very nice. I have a stock '93 VR4. Him and I went crusing one night. As we're coming onto the highway, I hear his exhaust SCREAM, and he starts leaving me. At about 40mph I downshift into 2nd, and I remained about 4 car lengths behind. I surprizingly noticed I wasn't gaining. Once I hit 3rd I began to reel him in. By the time I went into 4th, I was beside him. I kept it pinned and slowly pulled on him before he braked because of traffic, and I was satisfied with the single run. Came back from 4 cars for the win.
A few months later, he blew his engine with the addition of a 75 shot of ZEX. He got a new H22 engine and further tuned it. We ran again, this time starting side by side, doing the 3 honks thing. Starting in 2nd, I was very suprized that he immediately jumped a nose, with my torque advantage. We went through 2nd, 3rd, and into 4th, and he stayed a nose ahead the whole time. We repeated with the same result, him staying half a car in front, with no one pulling an inch. He said his bottle was empty and he wasn't spraying.
Although most Civics I see are ricers, this one is fast, and surprizes many people. Just imagine what he can do with the addition of ZEX (although I don't like nitrous). Until next time...

By the way, BEFORE his new engine, and BEFORE, his V-tec controller and cam gears, that car ran 13.8 and beat both a 350Z and an S2000 at the track. I did not witness that, but others have confirmed it.

Umm, I guess he'll blow his engine again. And he must've ran that 13.8 using nitrous, because there's no way a stock Civic is gonna run that.

I think it's quite possible with a swapped H22 in it....I mean it DOES make 200 hp stock and in a light civic with a decent driver, sure it could crack 13's.

Yeah, but he said BEFORE the guy put the H22 into it.

no the guys had 2 H22 engines put in the car now, he blew the first one and then put a new one in, as far as i can tell.

That's correct, the 13.8 was with his first H22, it just didn't have the VTec controller or cam gears.

hey good run.. yea some civics are fast, like my boys 95 hatch, stock looking, he just droped it with soem spoons rims, he put black messhing behind his bumper and got a black intercooler, re-circulated his bov, under his hood he has a worked ls/vtec turbo, he runs a 13.2 1/4 with 18psi of boost.. on a t3/t04e turbo.. its one mean ass car that no one suspects..

Sounds like a nice ride. Not too many 13 sec hondas on the roads. Makes a good sleeper.

he blew his engine by using only a 75 shot? something must be wrong with his setup. he must've not used the WOT switch to spray.
did he have a seperate button to spray it? casue if he did then that explains why he blew his first engine up. its all about timing when you spray the thing thats why.

He had it hooked directly to the throttle so when he opened it up, it injected automatically. Note: it blew at over 140mph while racing an SVT focus. Plus he drives it HARD. Has the rpm limit set at 7800 and hits the limiter constantly while free revving...not good.

I did, smart ass. The way it was worded wasn't very clear as to whether he was using the stock engine or the 1st H22.
Anyways, unless he has beaucoup $$$, he needs to go easy on the engine. Also, he needs to make sure he sets his nitrous kit up correctly. A jacked up setup can easily cause an engine to blow.

I love hearing stories about Civics. Makes me wish I had the money to do that to mine. Yeah, I was the one who got beat by the KIA, but I beat it afterwards. Someday I'll get me car to the point when I can run 13 sec 1/4s. Maybe 1,2 or even 10 years from now. Gotta love those unsuspecting Hondas. Late...

true there are a lot of ricers, but there are plenty of 10-12 second civics on the road

10-12 sec hondas on the steets? I have yet to see one. Or a 13 second one for that matter. The fastest honda i've seen in person was on a test and tune night at firebird raceway. It ran 14.9 1/4 mile. There were a lot of hondas that night as I recall. Mostly 16-17 second cars. Same thing I see every day on the road. I dunno, maybe I'm always looking in the wrong direction when they zoom passed me.

having any engine, that isnt rebuilt all the time due to racing, reving to 7800RPM is a very stupid thing. plus it sound really retarded while shifting.
Edit: Reving that high all the time.

There are a couple running 13's around here, a few high 14's, and most high 17's. The majority have mufflers and underglo, and they lose to Dodge Caravans. But with a B18C1 and a Procharger or Greddy turbo kit and, slicks they can hit mid 12's. But it's rare and takes a lot of money. The same amount into a Mustang or Camaro would be in the 9's, but Civics do have great streetability.

yo, in Minnesota, i've seen 2 12 second civics and 4 12 sec Tegs. All i have to say is that if you have a VR4 goin against a 13 sec civic you'll catch up slowly.
My friend has a Sub WRX Turbo, not a Sti, and he's gone against a Si on the highway and those pic up quick on the highway. those Civic Si's are pretty quick on the highway, that 99 civic si has i think the basic bolt ons and we, the WRX, lost the luanch on the highway but came back around 100 mph. oh yeah, the driver in the WRX wasnt that good of a driver too, so yeah, drivers do count most of the times in racing.

My brother has a video of a twin turbo Civic running like 10.35 or something (it's like 10.25-10.75). I'm at my dad's but as soon as I get home I'll copy to my comp and post it...pretty wicked.
As for the H22s....I thought they were only 195 HP from the Preludes? I know 5 HP isn't HUGE, but I'm helping my cousin with a swap on his 93' Accord, and he's throwin an H22A into it.
Nice story otherwise though.

twin turbo civic? theres all motor civics running times just higher than that like 10.8-9.
10sec hopefeul, you should steal his h22 and put it in your car, then youd have to change your AFsn...

To tell you the truth, I made this SN as I was living in the world of F&F...(can ya blame me? it has turned heads towards more than 1 kid...) anyway, being on here has totally changed my perspective towards the car racing world, and I know there is not a shot in hell I'll ever own a 10 second car (unless I spend $20,000 on an engine, which won't be for a long time)......anyway, ya, I'd love to take it, but after college and a job, I plan on getting a VR4 or throwing in an SR20 into the all-too-popular 240sx.
I'm actually going to be selling my 'teg this weekend because I need some money for college, plus I just don't need a car right now.
