buying a 924

Hi guys...

I just want to buy my first car. I like the 924 and I sead that it has a very good stability too and it's easy to drive. I like that the handbrake is on the left side like in a Lambo. I know that it's an old car and I will have problems with it, but this is my firs car!!! Maybe I will wreck it soon. I know that the early models have lots of Audi parts, like almost the whole engine, the suspension, etc. So please tell me your opinion. And tell me what should I look for and what problems do you have with them. And how much does it consumes too.

Ooooh! yes a nice and very low cost car. They are just beginning to go up in value in the UK. They are reliable enough, I use mine almost daily and then only for longer runs generally. Body is all galvanised on the later post 1980 models and the Lux has the electrical bits. Heated mirrors, sun roof, boot catch, etc. The engine is based on the Audi but the suspension and many body trim parts are VW. The rear brakes and wheel bearings on the drum versions being Beetle. Mine returns around 34 MPG but if driven as it should be then it drops to the low 20's. Not quick by todays standards but then you don't have to slow down for the bends either!!
The Turbo or the 2.5S versions are sought after so please don't crash one of them. The UK prices range from around 1000GBP for a basic 924 to 3000GBP for a good turbo or S.
Service history is important as usual and they are around with good ones. Bad points, not many. A few had soft camshafts but they should have been dealt with by around 80k miles. Fuel injection system is simple and generally just needs cleaning. Electrical problems are generally down to poor connections or bad earthing at the engine bay.
Otherwise buy one and have fun. R

924la mans are nice to look at, thats if you can find one, Did they do them in the US?, Black with mint Green decals, nice.

At the expense of sounding like an ass, but if you already have an Audi 200, I think that is the engine the 924 is based on... Additionally, I don't think that choosing what side the E-Brake lever is on makes much sense. Make no mistake, it's no Lambo.... It will spend more time on the road than in the shop. :wink:

According to sources, 500 1988 924S lemans special editions were brought to the US. As for the 78 924 lemans, I can't find any numbers dividing them or any for sale in the US.

The engine was also used in the AMC Gremlin as a custom for 77-78

About the Audi and the Renault: those cars were owned by my fiends and I, they were in common. We used those cars much for fun. I want to buy the 924 only for myself.

I would go for a 944 or the 924 S...It has the 2.5 Porsche engine, very durable but make sure the timing belt &balance belts are changed on time...You don't want to bend any valves...
