To double layer or to not double layer....

Ok pardon my lame Shakespeare rip off but I do have a dilema. I just bought a single layer lite-on 12 DVD+-RW single layer drive for $75. Anyway in the same store they have for $100 another lite-on 16X DVD+-RW which is double layer.
I opted for the single layer due to the lack of double layer media and rumors that it will not be available at decent prices any time soon. But now i have my doubts: should i exchange it and pay 25 extra for the double layer and be ready for when its media becomes cheap? Or should I wait till the double layer media comes and the double layer drives can write faster? Unless of course we have blue-ray or its competitor as an option by then.

Buy the double layer drive. $25 is not much of an outlay to future proof your hardware. And the second the chinese manufacturers get a grasp on the technology, the prices will go through the floor.

Yeah that is what i was thinking but my biggest turnoff is that the max write speed for dual layer is 2.4X. That will take forever to burn over 8gigs. I was thinking that maybe by the time the double layer media get cheaper they will more more decent speeds. The big question is how much longer till the dual layer media gets cheap.
PS. Cool sig

For $25 difference, I'd opt to buy the double layer writer. It's not a big enough price difference to make a big impact to me personally, so I'd go that route. And you'll be ready for double layer when it's more widely available. Hold off on other drives until the double layer writers are cheaper and faster to warrant another purchase. :)
