98 2.2 egr valve trans problem

Hi I have a 98 2.2 S10. The check engine lamp came on and in the past it has been the EGR valve. Is this hard to clean? I have had mechanics clean it in the past and it only lasts a few weeks. When it was replaced it lasted a few years. The truck has 160,000 on it. Also the trans doesn't like to shift from first to second sometimes. This usually hapens when I am under a light load condition, like going down a hill. Going up a hill its fine. Anything to look for other than a new tranny? By the way I broke down and ordered a code reader. Thanks Bob

Take it off spray it with throttle body cleaner, clear out the carbon chunks and reinstall with a new EGR gasket.

Also, reset the computer by removing the negative battery cable for 10 minutes.

You should be then good to go.

1998 has the OBD2 system so removing the bat cable will not clear the code.
When you have the EGR removed start the engine and give it a good rev. Doing that will blow out any carbon deep down in the intake. It works !!

That's funny, I remoeve my battery cable on my OBDII and it clears my codes.

It turned off the light but it did not clear the hard code set.

Funny, just hooked up the scanner and the code is not there.

The OBD2 system keeps a hard code stored untill it is cleared by the GM Tech Tool 2 or a set number of drive cycles. I not sure what type of scanner you are using. It might only be able to get the soft codes.By removeing the neg cable it cleared the soft code only.
You sound like a nice guy and seem to know a lot of stuff and I dont want to get into a pissing match with you or anyone else so lets just leave it at that.
